Can someone explain this 480i, 480p, 1080i business? (1 Viewer)

I would appreciate it if some could explain, or point me to a website that describes, what is meant by all these terms.

I've heard them used and have only the most basic understanding of the whole interlaced/progressive/high definition thing.

Basically I would like to know what the current television standard is, and how these new formats differ.
