Thanks JohnMor !

I really appreciate that list!

I need to buy the lost set and the 50th set. There are still several "family" sketches that have yet to be released. Hopefully they'll eventually get around to releasing them. To my knowledge, they still need to release 12/13/75, 2/7/76, 9/24/77, 10/15/77, & 11/5/77.

Thank you for this list. It really cleared everything up. I wish they would just release the show in order instead of trying to scam as much money as possible by confusing people.

The multiple variations of releases with the same title and different contents are maddening to say the least. In fact, that's pretty much why JohnMor's list was necessary in the first place.

One helpful hint: Check eBay for a lot of the Carol Burnett Time-Life sets. I managed to pick up just about everything and saved a ton of money. Having just bought the Guthy-Renker subscription series, there was no way I was going to spend hundreds of dollars for Time-Life versions of 90% the same content, some of which was edited. But I got "Carol's Favorites" for instance, for something like five bucks.

I just picked up a bunch off eBay as well. The time life bloated price is insane. They put few episodes on a ton of discs to make it seem like there is more content there than it is. I mean there's a lot of great content, it's just a little bit of a scam.

I have been trying to finish collecting these but I still have some questions that I haven't quite figured out. Some of my discs are still in the mail so It may clear itself up after I get everything sorted. Some of the releases are still a little confusing and I want to make sure I get everything, including all of the bonus content.

I found this: TIME LIFE EXCLUSIVE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION (curious if there is any unique bonus content as well as any unique episodes) (One of these contains 6 episodes, Went with the Wind!, outtakes, cast reunion. The other one contains 7 episodes, Disaster 75. Episodes: disc 1: 108,422,107, Disc 2: 1007, 1002, 1121, Disc 1 003,510,522)( I have seen 8, 9 and 11 disc sets)

Also something not mentioned:
11 YEARS, TOGETHER AGAIN – 10 DVDS from tbo collection. Looks like a combination of some of the other sets but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything unique to this collection

These bonus discs. Are they uniques to the set or is the content included on some of the other releases?

I think that's all I am confused about. I'd imagine maybe a lot of these do not have unique content but I just want to make a list of every single release just to make sure nothing is being missed as it could be easily done. I'll keep updating my post as I figure the rest out for sure

I haven't looked at every one of your links, but here are some quick notes...

The ones titled "Best Of (name of performer)" are all duplicate episodes.

All the big sets are broken into smaller sets, most of which are 6 DVDs, but then there are 1, 2 or 3-DVD versions with just some of the discs. However...in at least one or two cases, the single-disc might share a title with a different set than the one the actual content is from. And there is at least one with completely unique content, which was a Wal-Mart exclusive -- "This Time Together" single disc with a blue cover has three shows not released elsewhere by Time-Life, and I think possibly one of which wasn't released by Guthy-Renker.

Most "store exclusive" versions of a box set with an extra disc are just another disc added from another set. But there was a Costco exclusive 8-DVD version of "Carol's Crack-Ups" with unique content.

Only one show released by Columbia House was not re-released by Time-Life. But some Time-Life versions are edited.

I'd have to check this, but I believe "Together Again" is just a disc from "Carol's Crack-Ups."

If you get the recent 50th anniversary "Best Of" set, the one to get is the one with the RED cover. It's 10 DVDs and although it repeats a lot of shows, many are exclusive to this set. But if you check eBay, it can be found reasonably priced if you have patience. The 11-DVD version offered through Time-Life is just the 10-DVD set plus the final episode (which is available separately) in its own case. If you get them separately on eBaY you will save a ton of dough.

The big "Lost Episodes" set offered via Time-Life adds the "Lost Christmas" DVD which is available separately. There are two 2-DVD sets of extras, both of which I got pretty cheap on eBaY. ("Lost Christmas" has unique episodes not repeated on other "Lost Episodes" volumes.)

I'm not trying to take shots at Time-Life -- they have released a lot of great stuff -- but I am trying to save you a lot of money.

Hope this helps...

If you look at post #4 in this thread, everything is explained. The only thing not on the list is the 50th Anniversary set released by Time Life. You could buy this in an 11 disc set or a larger 21 disc set. The 11 disc set is the only portion that has any new to DVD content.

For the Columbia House releases volumes 2, 9, 11, 15, 18, 19, 20, & 31 all have episodes that were not released anywhere else. Additionally, volumes 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12, & 14 have episodes that were re-released by Time Life but were edited.

Chances are that if you purchase anything outside of the releases listed here and in post 4, you will be getting duplicate content.

I'll PM you with a list that I have that lists all episodes and each release. That way there is no confusion.

In a nutshell, here is what you need to build the most complete Carol Burnett Show set.

Carol's Favorites (orange 6 disc set)*
This Time Together (green Costco 7 disc set)*
This Time Together (blue Walmart 1 disc)
One More Time*
*these three titles made up the first Time Life set - The Ultimate Collection. The Time Life version of This Time Together was in a pick cover.
Christmas With Carol (later added to the Ultimate Collection)
Carol's Crack Ups (yellow/green Costco 8 disc set)
The Lost Episodes*
The Lost Episodes-Treasures From The Vaults*
The Lost Episodes-Classic Carol*
*these three titles made up the second Time Life set - The Lost Episodes
Carol's Lost Christmas (later added to the Lost Episodes Collection)
The Best of The Carol Burnett Show 50th Anniversary Edition (10 disc set plus the Final Show disc. Keep in mind that a lot of the new to DVD episodes in this collection have been edited. The Final Show is not edited)

All of the above are from Time Life plus you'll need to add:

Columbia House Volumes 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, & 31 (all episodes are complete and unedited)

Again, anything else and it is either repackaged stuff from previous releases or outright duplicates (Guthy-Renker)

If you're looking for exclusive bonus interviews/features you're on your own there. I didn't keep track of that stuff as it is not important to me. This list is only about the episodes of the show.

Why are 22 of those shows edited, song clearance issues?

Thanks for more information. Yea I was basically just trying to determine every different variation of each release and how to identify them as it was still a little confusing with some of the time life releases. You definitely have all of the information about episodes covered. I plan on noting the extra content for each release/variation when I get everything sorted. It seems as though there is only duplicate content between the variations but there could be something.

Also, I misspoke when I stated that only one show released by Columbia House wasn't re-released by Time-Life. There are actually more as noted above by Brian. But as I bought the Guthy-Renker set (which consisted of re-releases of the first 21 Columbia House volumes) I had made note of only one episode on the final ten volumes which has not been re-released by Time-Life.

There are some minor time discrepancies between versions of the same shows on the last ten Columbia House volumes versus the Time-Life sets. I haven't investigated what they are. For all I know, it could be the absence or presence of a mid-show bumper or something.

I'm thinking about scanning in all the inserts. While the releases are really confusing and convoluted, the inserts, at least for the time life releases, are all really descriptive. I might pick up some of the variations because the completionist in me is not satisfied if I don't, sadly.

Do you think they will ever cut out all this crap and make a unified complete set?

It's doubtful. I'd love to see a season by season release with as many episodes as can get released. It has been shown through the Time Life releases that it is possible to get the series out, but several episodes will end up edited due to the music clearance costs. The final set Time Life released was perhaps their laziest attempt. Most of the new to DVD episodes on the 50th Anniversary set were edited in some way with only the Final Show being complete and uncut. What was even more bothersome is that Time Life released episodes edited that Columbia House was able to release uncut. I estimated that had Time Life released 2 more large sets (60 episodes or more each), even with edited episodes, then the entire series would have been released or at least very, very close. Sadly, with the release of the Final Show by Time Life, I think that everything that is going to get released has been released. No comprehensive complete set as far as I can tell.

Why? It's really not that difficult to understand. If you are looking to build the most complete set as possible, then just follow what I posted above. That's all there is to it. The hard work is already done. Thanks to several people on this board that managed to pick through all of the various releases, versions and repackaging a final comprehensive list was achieved. Stick to that list when purchasing and it will limit most of the duplication of episodes but sadly, not all.

There is one episode in (IIRC) the "Carol's Crack-Ups" set which Time-Life thinks Dick Van Dyke is in, but he's not -- his name is listed as appearing in several skits in the episode, but he's actually not in it at all.
