Can overly stretched images on my HDTV cause display problems? (1 Viewer)

I was playing Silent Hill 2 on my Xbox the other day when I noticed that I seem to be missing a bunch of the picture. Text in the menus seem to be cropped off on the left and right by a good 2 inches (36" Zenith HDTV/Monitor).

There's no resizing in the basic menus, but I'm just wondering if some of the artifacts I'm experiencing are the result of my images being overly stretched

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about the cause of the artifacts you describe but the cropped text sounds like excessive overscan. If you have Avia, go to the advanced video test patterns and check out the overscan pattern -- it will show you what percentage of your picture is being cut off. You'll need to get into the monitor's service menu to make adjustments.
