Can I get away with using a 6 ohm speaker on an amp rated for 8-16 ohms?

My parents will be wanting thier Technics speakers back soon and I will need to fill the gap until I get better fronts. Anyway, my Pioneer VSX-510's manual says to use speakers between 8 and 16 ohms. Does this mean that using 6 ohms bookshelf speakers could damage the amp or even the speaker? It's too bad I can't keep the Technics, even without a sub the bass was very impressive.
