I know it's a digital signal, but can it do 5.1 like a DVD.
Maybe not in regular shows, but how about Pay-per-view movies? If it does, is it equipment dependent?

    Thanks

yes it can get 5.1 and yes it is equipment dependent. i have a hughes hird-d4 and i get 5.1 from some hbo and some showtime movies...it's pretty great. haven't had any audio dropout problems either like some here have reported.

  3. Depends on the receiver. All of the HD receivers have DD5.1. Most of the premium channels output DD depending on the movie/show. PPV is kind of hit-and-miss. Sometimes they have DD on and other times not

Is it through the optical connection, or can the RCA/S-video do it? Thanks.

RCA/S is video only and has nothing to do with sound/audio. 5.1 comes thru the digital optical connection, I am unaware of any DTV recievers using coax for 5.1 audio.

my hughes receiver uses a digital coax for what it's worth. again...the believe the model number is the hird-d4. bought it off of ebay for around $100-ish when my older receiver started getting fritzy on me.
