Having some guest over to check out some movies and I want a little variety. I want a engrossing crime drama mafia type. I am fam. with the Godfather series but thought initially that they seem a bit boring. Any opinions or rec'dations? thanks!

If you want something in that tradition that's a little offbeat, try CONTRABAND from Blue Underground. It's a violent Italian-made mafia story directed by Lucio Fulci, and it's entertaining.

Hmm, there are a few that I would recommend.
    Goodfellas
Once Upon a Time in America
    Casino
    Donnie Brasco
Gangster No. 1 (mid 60s British gangsters)
    Scarface (Cuban Mafia)

I have no idea what your tastes are like but here are what I consider the top Gangster films on DVD

    Godfather I & II - which you've seen

Once Upon A Time In America - though if you didn't care for The Godfather films then I doubt this would be for you.

    Scorsese films
    Goodfellas
    Casino
    Mean Streets
    Gangs of New York

    British Gangsters
    Get Carter 1971
    Long Good Friday
    The Hit

Hong Kong Gangster films (John Woo & Ringo Lam)
    A Better Tomorrow
    The Killer
    City On Fire
    Full Contact
    Hard Boiled

    DePalma
    Scarface
    Carlito's Way
    The Untouchables

    More recent traditional Gangster films
    Millers Crossing
    Donnie Brasco
    Road To Perdition

Vintage Gangster films (sadly not many to choose from)
    Scarface 1932

QT, Michael Mann & Luc Besson
    Reservoir Dogs
    Pulp Fiction
    Jackie Brown
    Heat
    Thief
    Leon

Oh and one of my guilty pleasures
    Payback

Wow! Much to choose from, thanks guys! I am thinking the Scorcese films get alot of play around the forums so I may start there. Any more would be great!

I heard Donny Brasco doesn't have a LFE track only 5.0 from a friend who warn about renting it. Is that true?

Goodfellas is the best mob film ever. Can't go wrong with that one.

Scarface is a classic as well (one of Pacino's best and most imitated performances) and its out in a new DVD this Tuesday...

But remember...when it comes to dvds..."don't get high on your own supply, man."

I haven't seen it, but a couple of people I talked to have recommended "MOBSTERS" as a good mob flick.

If you thought The Godfather series was kinda boring I guess I'd recommend New Jack City[IMG]

Seriously, I think JimK pretty much covered a lot of good ground. Print it up and get thee to a video store. And rewatch the Godfather series. They get better and better with repeat viewings. Honest. And the Sopranos although they're not movies is better than most gangster films.

If you liked those old brat pack movie from the 80's then this might be for you. It's the Young Guns meet the Godfather.

Personally it's one of the worst Gangster films I've ever seen & I've seen many. Then again your mileage may vary.

There are plenty more I'd love to recommend but unfortunately aren't on DVD.

    The Yakuza (1975)
    Point Blank (1967)

Melville (King of the French Gangster films)
Le Samourai - Inspired Woo's The Killer
Le Doulos a.k.a. The Finger Man
Also I haven't seen it but Le Cercle rouge is supposed to be on of his best films. This is coming out soon by Criterion.

    Vintage

    White Heat
    Public Enemy
    Roaring Twenties
    Angels With Dirty Faces
    The Criminal Code
    Little Caesar

Your mention of "YOUNG GUNS" makes me reevaluate whether I want to see the film or not. I didn't think much of YG. I'm not a gangster film buff but MILLER'S CROSSING was pretty good. I thought it was better than ROAD TO PERDITION, which also wasn't bad. My Brother-in-Law didn't agree with me though.

THanks everyone, rented Goodfellas last night and I WILL be buying this one! I just hope there is a better release soon. Awesome movie! Casino tonight (as you can see I am pro DeNiro and Pesci) [IMG] Oh and I did not think that the Godfather series was entirely boring through the one movie that I've seen but I didn't think it gripped me like Goodfellas throughout but maybe thats not a fair comparision since there are other movies in the GF series for me to see still. I will check out the others but after Casino [IMG]!
