Can an SVHS player record a satellite High Def broadcast?

    A friend of mine does it. He says it works quite well. Not sure what equipment he is using though.

    Yes you can, via the S-video output of the HD satellite receiver. However the resulting recording is NOT in HD format and does not have digital audio. It will be better than a standard VHS recording, but no where near HD quality.
