Can a Denon 5800 really match up and compare well to separates.

After reading meaning glowing reviews, I am interested in this unit since it simplifies connections and is upgradable. I am reluctant though due to the fact that I am used to what separate components sound like and their flexibility. I have a HK AVP1 (Fosgate 3a) which I know is dated but it was a hefty price tag a while back.. I'm wondering if I am going to lose much in the way of two channel?? hmmm... I have not been able to listen and test to the 5800 controlled. Should it be best to stay with amp/ preamp combos in the same price range?? thanks.

there was a very lenghty debate about this very issue not that long ago. Use the search function and read through that thread. IMO if you've already got seperate amps I'd stick with a seperate pre amp. If you're looking at the price point of the 5800 you have a few interesting options available to you incl the B&K ref 30 and the integra pre amp, used MC-1 and maybe the outlaw if its as good as they say it is.
