. . . I have been waiting for this for a month since they announced it.
While watching it, I noticed that all of the historical footage, all of the 4:3 sourced video (presumably from camcorder) and about half of the period photographs were stretched to fit the 16x9 aspect ratio.

It looked terrible and really took me out of the experience (as has never been done with HD material before).

I'm hoping to watch it closer for the next showing, there were too many home distractions at the time. I briefly watched the animation of the Bismark as well as the animated shell trajectories. Very cool. Several of the explosion were captured well in the audio. The mini robot looked to be a non-HD camera but the other submersibles had reasonably good looking HD results.

The non-HD broadcast was shown in letterbox format and the footage you're talking about was distorted there, too.
