I got my set in the mail yesterday. It's an impressive set and will take a long time to go through everything. A couple of annoyances I've encountered (so far):
  • There doesn't seem to be anything in the printed material, or on the discs themselves, to tell you which content is included on which disc
    • You have to pop them in one at a time and go through the menus until you find what you're looking for.
  • The onscreen menus aren't well thought out.
    • On disc 3, the menu says "Caligula: The Ultimate Cut" and you have options "Play Feature" and "Special Features." The feature on this disc turns out to be the 1980 theatrical cut, not the Ultimate Cut, which is what the menu would lead you to believe.
    • Menu navigation is confusing because the text that is NOT highlighted is what is actually selected (when the text changes from bright white to black, that means you've selected it).
As a public service, the breakdown of the discs is as follows:
Disc 1 (UHD): Ultimate Cut plus bonus features, which appear to duplicate some bonus features from Disc 4
Disc 2 (BD): Ultimate Cut (I didn't actually look at this disc, but I would presume it also includes bonus features)
Disc 3 (BD): 1980 Theatrical Cut plus bonus features
Disc 4 (BD): Alternate cuts (Pre-release, Australian, Italian) and the bulk of the bonus features

Thanks Brian! I still may pick this up one day. Can’t have enough copies of Caligula around the house.
For the education and edification of your twin boys! You've got to start them young on the classics...
As Miss Brodie (the great, late Maggie Smith) said: Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she's mine forever (paraphrase from memory).

I'm just curious if the "Ultimate Cut" with the promised new scenes actually leans closer to the Gore Vidal script with more story and more actual acting by the fine cast employed than the "porn version" which is more "70's" than Satyricon, which I loved so much more.

I’ll be reviewing the ultimate cut in full later on but I made some comments on the thread about the North American release that I think speak to your question:

Great review. Seems there is a lot of added value to it now. I'll be picking this up.
