Sounds like you're spot on then! You definitely want to keep both bars visible, and if the control is coarse then some slight dithering on the black background is acceptable.

Now remember to go check what happened with your white level and make sure that's still correct .

White level is cool, thanks again for all your help, I was hoping to get it right by dawn when the sun comes up and ruins my workable room conditions.
