ok I THINK i've figured out the calibration thing a little, but need a little direction related to my specific set-up. On the DVE disk, the tutorial mentions to point the SPL meter UP while calibrating. But then I read somewhere else that it should be pointed forward.

One caveat about pointing the SPL up, is that my rear speakers are on a shelf almost immediately behind the couch, pointed toward the ceiling. So if I point the SPL up, wouldn't the reading make the surrounds slightly quieter (because it would be a more "direct" sound-wave path from the ceiling). Does that part make sense?

Oh, and i've read the Sub calibration with DVE, so i'll bump it up 10DB...

point it towards the central point where the wall behind your front speakers meets the ceiling

A tripod helps out significantly in this process.
