Jeff, since you have popped the top on the 'CA70ES and I haven't, I can't dispute what type of DAC is used in this changer. Still, Sony has changed the description of the DAC used in the 'CA70ES on its web site since I last looked some months ago. Also, Sony's web site is average at best, and I have found that Crutchfield offers better information on Sony products most of the time. This is one situation where Crutchfield got it wrong. By the way, I have also read in the past that an Advanced Pulse DAC, not a Current Pulse DAC, was used in the CDP-XA1ES single-disc CD player, which came out around the same time as the 'CA70ES. Maybe 'XA1ES actually has a Current Pulse DAC.
Obviously, opinions on the relative sound quality of players vary. In my experience, the 'CA80ES was noticeably better than the 'CA70ES, which is why I bought two 'CA80ES changers once upon a time (one for each system). Actually, I ordered a 'CA70ES for my second system in November 2000 to save some money, but the dealer screwed up my order and sent me a 'CA80ES for my troubles. It worked out great for me. So, I stick with my earlier comment. I would urge anyone to get a 'CA80ES over a 'CA70ES if at all possible. Of course, Sony's ES SACD changers are much better CD players than the 'CA70ES or 'CA80ES, so I've moved on from the 'CA80ES.
