Quite frankly I'm sick of all the over exposure. I knew Sharapova was a one trick pony and glad to see her pack her bags. Way to pimp slap her Venus.

Yeah people ragged on Kournikova cos she couldn't win "a big one", and now it seems that winning a big one isn't enough.

I'm sure if you talk to the vast majority of tennis players, one Wimbledon championship would be enough.

Oh yeah, as John pointed out, it's not like Sharapova's career is over now.

Yeah Drew, get real. Sharapova walked over all her opponents up until Willams, and her career is definitely not over. That being said, Venus played a hell of a game, also good to see her back in the finals. It's pretty exciting to see the end of Davenport / Mauresmo.

Technically, Kournikova did win a major (twice) at the Australian Open...

I'd hardly call Sharapova's career over after one loss at what 17 or 18 years?

"Technically, Kournikova did win a major (twice) at the Australian Open..."

She was lucky enough to have a very good partner when she won a couple of doubles majors

    Brent .

It was a great first set, I was happy I left after that.

I was pleased to see Venus win.

But after watching Shapapova in several matches, I at least, would not characterize her as a 'one trick pony'.

She has a good serve, a much better second serve than most of the women, good groundstrokes and can play at the net.

As a teenager, a more complete game than a good many when they finish their careers.

I have a lot of respect for Sharapova's game...i'm just having some fun talkin' smack. Sharapova will definitely contend in the future - she got game and showed it when she spanked Serena at Wimby last year. But I like to see flashes of brilliance from the "old" fogies like Venus, Davenport, and Pierce every now and then - kinda like when Magic and Jordan briefly came out of retirement to school those up and comers.

I would hardly call a 1 point victory "pimp slapping good'. "Lucky" is probably a better term.

Now If she won by 15 points .....

Huh? Venus won 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. Where are you getting a 1 point victory from?

Sort of off-topic here, but when did that ever happen? Magic's return in '96 was a flop, and Jordan's with the Wizards wasn't a whole lot better. Jordan obviously schooled everyone when he came back from his first retirement, but that was three championships, not a brief return.

He'll always have that one block against Ron Mercer which I'll remember. [IMG]

    As for Sharapova.....hardly a one-trick pony.

Anna Kournikova as a junior (or is the correct term amateur?) was really good. It's just her turn as pro wasn't all that great.

Sharapova hasn't reached a major final since Wimby 2004. So she's a decent player but the hype is OTT.

Venus and Serena had insane hype before either of them had ever won anything. Of course, they eventually earned it by taking home multiple major titles, so Sharapova still has a ways to go to match that, but she's #2 in the world and has lots of other tournament wins. Obviously the hype is largely due to her, uh, non-tennis-related assets, but she's got the goods on the court as well.

The level of play in the first set was just great. Too bad the second set was so lopsided. I don't like matches that are not competitive. A tight 3 set match would have been a lot more fun to watch. Yeah, I am sick of seeing the Canon commercial. But you just can't fault Sharapova for cashing in on her beauty and tennis talent.

I wonder if Venus would trade places with Sharapova if she could?
