I confess ignorance on both of those. But I believe it.

I don’t know if a third camera will justify an additional $300 for my wife or I. I don’t know for sure if I’ll upgrade to an iPhone 11 or go a third year and wait for iPhone 12.

    Ok, Tech-heads.

    The event has been held.

Going back to the earlier discussion about my idea of upgrading my VERY-soon-to-be-outdated iPhone 6 (September 19th, I guess) to an iPhone XR.

I was advised to wait (even though at the time I could get a $100 credit for trading in my iPhone 6 on an upgrade). So what should I now know about the change in the iPhone landscape in terms of proceeding with my potential upgrade? Even though my sister actually works at the local Apple store, I have extremely limited understanding of how the Apple juggernaut bobs and weaves.

Sincere thanks for any guidance you all can give me.

An iPhone XR is $599 (64 GB) or $649 (128 GB). An iPhone 11 is $699 (64 GB), $749 (128 GB), or $849 (256 GB). I.e., the XR costs $100 less than an equivalent-capacity 11. Apple is offering a credit of "up to $60" for trading in an iPhone 6, on a purchase of either.

Looking at the iPhone comparison on the Apple site, the XR and 11 have the same size and weight. They appear to have the same display. The 11 has
    • dual rear cameras (Wide and Ultra Wide) to the XR's one (Wide)
    • higher resolution and 4K video recording on its front camera
    • "spatial audio playback" and "Dolby Atmos"
    • support for 802.11ax WiFi 6 and Gigabit-class LTE
    • water resistance to 2 meters (vs. 1)
    • up to 1 hour more battery life
    • a different selection of case colors (e.g., XR: blue vs. 11: green)
So you get a few goodies for the $100. None of these are life and death, so if you'd rather go with the XR and pocket the $100, you might be just as happy with that.

@Mike Frezon you listened to us and now the iPhone XR is $150 cheaper.

Go to Apple store, buy XR, trade in old iPhone, and you’re done. Or do it online and don’t bother going to a store.

Or, you can watch and see what promos your carrier offers or what local retailers like Target offer. Depending on your interest in chasing a perfect deal.

I'm sure that will be one use case :rolling-smiley:
For me it would make a huge difference for live concert videos at very low light venues like Barbès

Gazelle and used-iPhone buyers of that ilk are forked. Gazelle offers $210 for an iPhone 8+. Apple now offers $300 with new purchase. And with the price drop of the 11 / XR / 8 models, used sale prices will further be dropped.

    Thanks, Thomas and Dave!

Your input is very much appreciated and a huge help..

I'll be open to the 11...but the XR already is such a huge advance over the 6 that I'll probably be content with pocketing that $100. Maybe it's a long term bad decision, but I've been known to be pennywise and pound foolish before.

I'm now off to the Apple website to get my feet wet!

Watches don't seem to be selling well.

I keep checking back and the ship dates on the most basic models are still shipping for September 20th delivery.

Usually, if there was a rush on these products the shipping date would have been pushed back within the first hour.

It's now almost a day later.

They didn’t announce (nor did I expect them to) third party faces for the watch. I would really like to see what third party developers could come up with.

What is meant by Dolby Atmos for the phones? Do they have some tiny ceiling speakers in there? :P

Watches are one of the things that may get hit by tariffs shortly, thus Apple is shipping a much larger supply to the US than they normally would, to avoid them as long as possible

And also to what @Ted Todorov suggests, these are an iteration of the S4, with fundamentally the same internals, so they’re already manufacturing at scale and have no problem meeting anticipated demand.

I wonder if they're a victim of their own engineering and design prowess. I love my Series 4. Can't imagine being without it. In fact, on the rare occasion I leave home but forget putting it on, I turn around and get it. It's like leaving my wallet behind.

That said, I can't think of a thing I wish it would do. I mean, it doesn't do everything, obviously. But for my needs, it doesn't really have any functional gaps. I haven't even bothered to watch the Keynote yet because both my X and my S4 have not left me wanting. That's not to say that the 11 Pro and S5 aren't superior devices, they obviously are, but that they've now gotten to a point where their devices and ecosystem are so mature, I don't find myself tempted to even consider an upgrade because of how well those devices fulfill my tech needs.

Carlo, totally agree, obviously the question is what percentage of Apple Watch users have a 4 vs. earlier models.
I have a 3 and want to/will upgrade but I am not doing it online-I will get it from the local Apple Store along with upgrading my iPhone (I am on the annual upgrade program - to me camera upgrades are vital, also my T-Mobile unlimited monthly fee is so much cheaper than what the AT&T grandfathered unlimited was ($30 vs $100) that I am spending less then what I was before upgrading every other year.

I am not tempted to upgrade my watch either. I am eagerly awaiting watchOS 6 just for the Noise app.

Virtualized surround sound. The software is mature and works surprisingly well for what it is (2 speakers emulating)

Upgrading my wife’s S3 to an S5 will be a big upgrade. :)

I have a hand me down S3 I use as a fitness gadget and weekend watch. I’ve really come to love it. I’d like to upgrade to the bigger-face S5. And always on face would help at the gym. But for my needs, it’s not worth the money right now.
