I saw "The Sum of ALL Fears" yesterday & it made me think of this film. I think it was an HBO production. Does HBO do their own releasing? If not, which company would be responsible for any possible release?:D

Glenn. Right title. Wrong movie. The one Jeff was refering to was about a possible Nuclear war that was released in 1990. The version I think you are refering to is about an aging cowboy that was released in 2000.
Here are links to the 2 movies as listed by imdb

As far as rights go, it looks like HBO still controls this one. So hopefully they will release it at some time. Maybe later in the year when "Sum of All Fears" comes out.
I really hope that the 1990 one comes to disc, as I would love to have this one in the collection.
Jeff here is the schedule for By Dawns Early Light as shown on Action Max(Cinimax).
The next showing is June 20th at 8:45am East
Peace

I was just going by the title, but that sucks that it is the wrong movie. I would have picked it up quickly.

Good little movie...I also liked "Miracle Mile" (I think that was the name) another nuclear war movie. Would love to have both in my collection.

I have the VHS version and it is a very thought provoking movie, much in line with "Fail Safe".

I am a sucker for apocalyptic movies and have a few. Can someone post their suggestions which are on or soon to be on DVD?

Steven, you might want to check out 'Deterrence'. It's the 90's version of Fail Safe, and is just as thought-provoking today.

I heard recently that "The Day After," another very fine TV movie about nuclear holocaust, is being released to DVD soon, but I don't know the date.

If you liked "By Dawn's Early Light," let me recommend "Testament," which is not quite as action-oriented and significantly more grim than "Day After" or "Early Light." It's still VHS-only, I don't even think there's an LD (I've looked for it). I picked the VHS up at a previously-viewed outlet here in town.

I've seen "Testament" & I did not like it. I have a Region 0 DVD of "The Day After". The transfer is ordinary. I'd like a better version.

Anyone heard anything new about Dawn ?

Just watched Deterrence again (damn good flick) and remembered this 12 year old movie.

Jeff;

Where did you find the region 0 Day After DVD? Even a mediocre transfer is better than the alternative; VHS or nothing at all.

thanks

The best movie on nuclear war was 'Threads', made by the BBC some years ago. Not only did it show the effects of the attacks themselves (on a medium-sized English city), but also the years of after-effects, including nuclear winter. No idea if it's ever coming to DVD, but it makes for very dark, quite gripping drama.

Testament was excellent, but very subdued. Not everyone's taste.

Of course, no one's mentioned my personal favorite post-nuclear movie: Damnaton Alley. (J/K)

Im a big fan of the nuclear-holocaust-apocolyptic movie genre.

"The Day After" is probably my favorite; not brilliant by any means, but pretty good (and a reasonably decent cast to boot).

"Threads" is very good as well, although chances of seeing it in the US are slim.

"Testament" was OK...

"By Dawn's Early Light" and "Failsafe" are both good movies, as was "Deterrence", but they really dont deal with the effects of nuclear holocaust, just the tension leading up to one.

Good to see this is coming out. They should also release "Twilight's Last Gleaming"!
