Classic Cowboy Cinema Takes Aim on April 22, 2025

BURBANK, CA (March 20, 2025) – Justice is coming when the legendary epic action-adventure, Tombstone, rides again on April 22 on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. The film has been meticulously remastered and restored, allowing audiences to experience every gun battle with stunning visuals and immersive sound. Tombstone will also be available on digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

Originally released in 1993, this is the first 4K rodeo for Tombstone, triggering viewers to witness all the dustups and defilement of the Wild West in crisp visual detail unlike ever before. Without having to skin a smoke wagon, Tombstone’s audience will get a peek behind the saloon doors to see how Director George P. Cosmatos and his gang of filmmakers brought the historic O.K. Corral into theatrical reality, including the storyboard process and realistic Old West gunslinging.

The upcoming 4K release of Tombstone is the high-res huckleberry fans have awaited for decades….you’re a daisy if you don’t add it to your personal cinema archives. Along with previously released bonus extras, the 4K disc will draw an eye-popping collectible limited edition SteelBook® with custom artwork and packaging.

Yeah the longer cut has only ever been on DVD. There seems to be a trend lately of invalidating non-theatrical cuts.
Lol! I’m getting old because I forgot about that 2002 DVD release. Luckily, I made notes of it in DVD Provider and that I kept that DVD disc in the 2010 BD case. I need to watch both versions during our Western Challenge.

To be fair, back in the DVD era studios would often randomly cobble extended versions together solely for marketing purposes.

Anyway, I'm ecstatic that Tombstone is finally getting a 4K release!

I remember thinking when this came out that it was unfortunate it had to go head-to-head with Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp. Coster was a huge draw at the time, coming off of Dances With Wolves, JFK, and so forth. But Tombstone ended up being the one with staying power. It's a better film IMO, and one that people have responded to for more than 30 years.

Tombstone also managed to do better at the box office back in the day.

I don't agree with you. I think Wyatt Earp is a better and more accurate movie. However, I do concede that Tombstone is a more popular movie.

Not to be too pedantic, but it depends on how you're defining "better."

Admittedly, I've only see Costner's EARP once and it was many years ago. But it has some pretty big weaknesses - not the least of which is a then-39 year old Costner very unconvincingly playing a teenage Wyatt and its pacing.

While perhaps EARP has overall better filmcraft on display, TOMBSTONE is (subjective call) far more entertaining and engaging. It's eminently rewatchable, which I don't think EARP is.

Also did they get a little to "cute" with that press release?

Personal cinema archive?

Who says that

I mean, yeah, obviously they were trying to be cute there, as is obvious when reading the rest of the sentence:

"The upcoming 4K release of Tombstone is the high-res huckleberry fans have awaited for decades….you’re a daisy if you don’t add it to your personal cinema archives."

I like both movies, but will fully acknowledge that the Kasdan/Costner Wyatt Earp is very leaden and self-serious. Tombstone is just a hell of a lot more fun.

As for the two having the misfortune to face off against one another, they were released six months apart. Tombstone was the clear winner, having been made for much less money and grossing more at the box office. It wasn't a huge hit, but it was profitable, whereas Wyatt Earp was a decided flop.

Wyatt Earp's real misfortune was being released opposite The Lion King, which absolutely crushed it. You'd think those two movies would have different audiences, but parents were too busy taking their kids to the Disney movie and didn't have time for a three-hour Western. Grown-ups without kids opted to spend their money on either Speed or Wolf instead, both of which had opened just prior.

I seem to recall the public was starting to grow weary of Kevin Costner around that time as well. Or maybe that was just me and I'm projecting.

I don't remember Tombstone, but I remember I was underwhelmed, in regards to its reputation.
Maybe I need to see it again.
