I just noticed the $60.00 is for Canada. Still, the $50.00 being asked for the US version is far too much for a single movie release.

I'd guess the high MSRP is going to eat up more of the retailers' margins rather than being passed on to the customer. This title is the very definition of a loss-leader.

This is going to be the biggest selling disc of the year so the 2-D version will be about $20 and the 3-D version will be about $30.
Amazon had an earlier promotion in which I took advantage of in which the 3-D release final price was 29.99

New trend: Make a ton of money at the Box Office, charge a premium for the Blu-ray. And before anyone says "actual prices are always lower than the MSRP", keep in mind the MSRP is very high so even with a discount, this will still be expensive.

It appears that TARGET is also getting an Exclusive Bonus Disc with the 3D version.
"Target Exclusive Bonus Disc – Building a Dream: Assembling the Avengers
This 90-minute feature will show how the films IRON MAN, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, IRON MAN 2, THOR, and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER were conceived and led to the greatest super hero team ever assembled on screen – THE AVENGERS. "

I'm so torn on this one. I really want this movie, but OTOH, I've been reading there was about 30 minutes of footage cut, and I'm certain we'll see a double dip extended edition when Avengers 2 releases. I preordered it, and I know I'll end up getting it, but it just annoys me that I know an extended edition double dip is inevitable :(

While a double dip is undoubtedly inevitable, Joss Whedon is on the record saying that the theatrical cut is his director's cut. So while there may be an extended cut down the road, it won't be his cut. I can count on one hand the number of extended cuts that improve a film; using it just means redundant scenes that drag the pacing down.

Well, isn't the 30 minutes of cut footage on the DVD/Blu-ray release? I know it has deleted scenes, and they're pretty significant ones (I won't go into any details for those trying to avoid deleted scenes spoilers :) ). So unless he's talking about an ADDITIONAL 30 minutes of footage, I think you're safe.
Whedon is a filmmaker that I've never minded supporting no matter what. I mean, I get that he really no longer needs me after this summer, but he's given me countless hours of entertainment so if I have to buy THE AVENGERS when it comes out, and then buy it again in a year, and then again when the sequel comes out, I literally have no problem with that.
The way I figure it, it's the least I can do for the man who gave me "The Zeppo."
