LOS ANGELES, CA. (Nov. 6, 2020) – Disney’s animated treasure Mulan has captured audiences for over 20 years, and this year’s live-action re-imagining of the beloved tale has been hailed as “visually stunning and action-packed” (Brian Truitt, USA Today). Just in time for the holidays, on November 10, bring home both the animated original – new in 4K Ultra HD™ – and the live-action film. The films will also be available in a 2-movie collection which will include the Blu-ray™, DVD and digital of both films.

Disney’s Live-Action Mulan

Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s Mulan in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation… and a proud father.

Disney’s live-action Mulan will be available in 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD on November 10. Additionally, fans can find the film packaged as a collectible SteelBook® at Best Buy and packaged with a limited-edition gallery book at Target.

So much for Disney giving up on physical media … for now. But what does surprise me is how heavily the new one was touted as a D+ exclusive, but now it isn't.

No one ever said Disney was giving up on physical media. I assume you are referring to Bill Hunt's reporting from a few months ago. That said that Disney was going to stop live-action titles on 4K. Neither of these releases applies to that because the 2020 film is a new release, and the 1998 film is a legacy animated catalog title. That's different than live-action catalog.

But what does surprise me is how heavily the new one was touted as a D+ exclusive, but now it isn't.

Disney never said that it was going to stay exclusive to Disney+. I never expected it to do so. If there was no COVID and it had been a traditional theatrical release, they would have done a Blu-ray release. I don't see why it's a surprise that they it is still getting one. It started as a Disney+ exclusive, but they made the money that they're going to make with that strategy. Now it is time for the another window which is physical media.

Similarly, I fully expect to purchase Soul on Blu-ray at some point in 2021. It will be a Disney+ exclusive for a while, and then they'll put it out on disc to get more money that way.

This is a weird one.

The artwork posted above for the Best Buy steelbook of the animated film clearly shows disc art of Mulan as Ping saving Shang in the avalanche on the Blu-ray disc.

I have the steelbook and this image is also shown on the wraparound cardboard card at the top of the steelbook. But once you open it up, the image on the actual Blu-ray inside the package is different. It actually features Mulan in her Ping look accompanied by Mushu. The UHD disc is as pictured. This is the first time I have ever seen a discrepancy between advertised disc art and the actual final product. Either one is effective, so this isn't a problem, but it's interesting that it was changed in the process of getting the release ready, especially since they show one on the packaging itself before the card is detached from the steelbook.

Also, the Blu-ray disc includes a preview for Finding Dory coming soon to theaters, so I'm guessing it was authored in 2016. It contains all the same extras for the first film as the 2-Movie Collection released in 2013. However, it gladly drops Mulan II and the handful of extras related to that cheapquel. I resented having to purchase that film to get the original on Blu-ray, so I am absolutely delighted to now have the original independently and will be getting rid of the 2-Movie Collection shortly.
