Amazon discounting has now kicked in for the standard Blu-ray which is currently at $24.99. The 4K keepcase version is still stuck at its $49.99 retail price.
Got it for $7.99 with some credits on iTunes. Looks and sounds terrific in 4K/Dolby Atmos. . I’ll pick up the disc eventually too when it’s more reasonably priced.

My review copy arrived today. One thing the press release does not make completely clear is that the Blu-ray included with the 4K disc is essentially a disc of just bonus features. There is no HD version of the movie included on that disc, only the split screen “Raw Cut.”

Thank you very much for clearing that up. You saved me from making an incorrect purchase. I was under the impression that the Blu-ray disc in the 4K package would be the same as released individually. If that had been the case, I could have future-proofed with the combo pack.

Because that is not the case, I will only be getting the standard Blu-ray release.

Now the question becomes if the standard Blu-ray-only release includes the raw cut or if that is being held back exclusively as a bonus feature inside the 4K release only.

I would like to see the Raw Cut. But I absolutely must have the completed version of the movie on Blu-ray, which means I need the standalone Blu-ray release. I'll watch the Raw Cut if it is on there. But I will not purchase the 4K version just to get the Raw Cut too.

It looks like the Raw Cut is exclusive to the 4K physical release. Specs on most retailer sites for the Blu-ray edition state that it is a single disc release. Now, it is possible that the Raw Cut may eventually be included on digital after the physical release, (I’ve seen studios do this before) but that is a week from now.

I would very much like your interpretation to be wrong, but I think you are very likely correct.

I just find the way they are handling this release very frustrating because you can't get everything with one purchase. I don't have the capability to use 4K right now, so I need a standard Blu-ray of the final movie in order to be able to watch it. I would probably have been willing to buy the 4K release in order to get The Raw Cut if the standard Blu-ray had been included in there as well. But by not including the standard Blu-ray in the 4K release, that means I would have to make two purchases: the standard Blu-ray for the theatrical release and the 4K release for the Raw Cut.

I loved the movie -- it is one of only three movies this year that I saw in theaters twice -- and I absolutely want it as part of my collection. But I'm not going to make two separate purchases to get everything. One purchase would be fine, but not two. I don't think that's a good way for the studio to treat fans who are still willing to shell out money for physical media.

Pardon my ignorance, but what the heck is the 'Raw Cut'?
From Post #1:

Fans can delve deeper into the franchise on 4K UHD editions with “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut,” a full-length alternative cut with a split-screen comparison between the final cut of the film and a version with unfinished VFX with optional audio commentary by director Wes Ball, editor Dan Zimmerman and VFX supervisor Erik Winquist. The never-before-seen alternate cut gives fans a unique opportunity to see the actors’ performances before the visual effects were completed.

@Todd Erwin's interpretation is indeed correct.

This from the official Planet of the Apes Facebook page today. Emphasis mine.

"Bring Apes home. On August 27th, own Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K UHD™ including the special Collector’s Limited Edition SteelBook®. 4K UHD editions include exclusive alternative version, Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut. Pre-order now: planetoftheapes.com"
Also, here is the back cover for the standard Blu-ray with its features listed. No Raw Cut.

Oh well. Despite the inept way this release has turned out (why not include the movie Blu-ray in the 4K package?), I'm still looking forward to owning the film next week.

The way this release has been handled just keeps getting more disappointing the more I learn about it.

Apparently, the audio commentary with director Wes Ball is only available on the Raw Cut Blu-ray disc inside the 4K package. So it's not only the alternate cut that is exclusive to that release. The audio commentary is something else that owners of the theatrical release Blu-ray will not be able to access.

Whoever decided to handle it this way made a really frustrating decision.

Sigh.

If anyone has the disc already, what do the subtitles for the ape sign-language look like?

The theatrical version had them in a yellow/gold font reminiscent of that used for DAWN and WAR. But Disney has normally used the generic player-generated white subs for their discs in recent years.

Not sure if it was just me or not, but I was charged $50 + tax for this, so during the pre-order window, the price never went lower, BUT today, the 4k is $34.99. I've never had much luck doing price matches with Amazon, but I didn't want to rebuy and return. Did a chat, and they gave my account a $15 credit. Wasn't going to argue too much for the tax they owed me.

Not true. I preordered at $64, and the price did drop to $35, which is what I was charged.

There is no reason they can't retain the correct font/color with the PGS format. It has been done on plenty of discs before.
Here's a weird wrinkle. There are maybe one or two lines in the deleted scenes that are subtitled. I didn't count them. But I took notice because those subtitles are indeed yellow. But as Robert said, the subtitles in the actual movie are white. I bought the single Blu-ray of the theatrical version because I don't have the capability to watch 4K at home.

I agree that changing the font and color of the subtitles is unnecessary. However, I also don't think it matters that much. I saw this movie theatrically twice. But if you hadn't asked about them, I don't think I would have given a second thought to the subtitles being presented differently here.

The deleted scenes also include a fair amount of unfinished visual effects, conceptual renderings and footage of the actors in their motion capture suits. I assume this is essentially what the Raw Cut of the movie from the 4K + bonus Blu package is like. I would have still liked to get the whole thing with the theatrical Blu-ray and think Disney should have made it possible to get everything in one purchase. But having the deleted scenes presented in this fashion at least gives Blu-ray customers a sample of how this kind of filmmaking works

There are a very healthy amount of deleted scenes, and all of them have optional commentary commentary from Wes Ball. The making-of documentary is pretty good too. That's everything on the standard theatrical Blu-ray.

I've never had much luck doing price matches with Amazon, but I didn't want to rebuy and return.
You should be refunded automatically. If a pre-order item goes down in price after yours is shipped, the pre-order price guarantee means you should automatically be refunded the difference after the end of the release day. This includes excess tax if applicable (I've had that adjusted a few times.) The refund usually comes through in the next day or so after the item is released. At least, that's how it's supposed to work and has usually worked for me.

Yes, 100% true. I was charged $49.99. But Customer Service gave me a credit for $15 which was what I was after.

Usually, in my experience as of late, the order will show the lower price (even if different than when I pre-ordered) so I generally get the "You saved money!" email.

Which is what prompted to ask customer service for help. Got my $15 credit.

And then this morning, I was automatically refunded $16.11 because the price went down, but it went down after it was shipped, and that's not a scenario I've encountered in a very long time.
