on May 27

BURBANK, CA (April 10, 2025) – The grit and drama of Ridley Scott’s epic Kingdom of Heaven Director’s Cut makes history come alive again when it plays out on digital retailers (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home) and on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc as of May 27.

This stunningly restored and remastered Director’s Cut adds more gravitas and organic characterization to the historical masterpiece, a cinematic experience that is further plussed when seen in Dolby Vision and heard with Atmos. Visionary director Ridley Scott crafted a passionate and perilous tale of the Crusades that has made its mark on audiences for decades, but never before has it been shown in such high-definition sight and sound, deepening the experience for longtime fans and a new generation alike.

Originally released on May 6, 2005, Kingdom of Heaven is one of Scott’s most revered creative endeavors, having crafted a world rich in history, adventure, and visual splendor in which to tell an epic tale. Orlando Bloom stars as the courageous Balian, a young Frenchman in medieval Jerusalem during the Crusades. Having lost everything, Balian finds redemption through a heroic fight — against overwhelming forces — to save his people and fulfill his destiny as a knight.

20th Century Studios will present a special one-night-only 4K theatrical re-release of Kingdom of Heaven on Wednesday, May 14. Beyond Fest will also host an advanced viewing of the 4K release on Friday, May 2 at The Egyptian Theatre, where fans can experience Ridley Scott’s Director’s Cut for the first time in stunning, remastered 4K. Tickets will be made available soon.

The 20th Anniversary Blu-ray disc release of Kingdom of Heaven is a three-disc set encased in a collectible SteelBook® that honors the remarkable weaponry and masks featured in the film. Behind the scenes footage includes a look at the creation of spectacular visual effects, a retrospective of world premiere excitement, deleted scenes and insightful filmmaker reflections so that fans can appreciate and remember it as the brave and beautiful film Ridley Scott intended it to be.

Perhaps the worst "big" film I have ever seen!
Mind you, I have not seen the director's cut, that all swear is a better movie!

The Director’s Cut is streets ahead of the theatrical version which had so much cut out that it made very little sense.

The Director's Cut is indeed a significant improvement over the theatrical cut, to the point that some fans call it a "masterpiece." I wouldn't go nearly that far. Even in the Director's Cut, the movie is still very flawed, and no amount of re-editing can fix the miscasting of Orlando Bloom in the lead.

For me, the theatrical cut is about a 2.5-star movie, while the Director's Cut bumps it up to 3.5 stars.

The Directors Cut/ Roadshow version is a throwback to the Roadshow films of the 50’s/60’s. El CID comes to mind. The theatrical version was a mess and a huge disappointment. However, the extended version is quite good. Perhaps not a masterpiece but very good nonetheless.

I own the the BD and have tried to watch the DC on two different occasions. There are aspects about it I like, but I cannot get it to 'click' for me. In fact, I couldn't even get through the entire film. It's been a while though so I wonder about revisiting it on UHD.

will the special effects/ CGI be a 2k to 4k upscale. Pretty sure this was finished as a 2K digital intermediate

I agree that the Director's Cut is superior to the theatrical version, and that it is a very pretty film (as is often true for Ridley Scott's work). I don't think it's a great film, though; it suffers from the problem that everyone else in the film is more interesting than Orlando Bloom's Balian, and I'd much rather watch a story about any one of them.

I'll probably pick up the 4K edition at some point just for the scenery and production detail and Ghassan Massoud's towering performance as Saladin, but it won't be a rush for me.

More inventory is coming. Studios are not placing large orders for physical media from replication plants like they used to.
