Fede Alvarez says they improved the CGI Ian Holm for the home release.

“We just ran out of time in post-production to get it right. I wasn’t 100% happy with some of the shots [in the theatrical release]”

It was a terrible idea from the outset. Not only is it poorly done, it adds nothing to the story.

What it "added to the story" was another fan-service callback in a movie that exists solely to dole out fan-service callbacks to earlier, better films. As narratively pointless as it may be, scenes like this were the explicit mission statement of the production.

Obviously that’s a matter of opinion.

I enjoyed that aspect of the film as it tied in the company’s practice of using similar synthetic humans ala Bishop.

I still would rank this film third after the first two films.

Clearly. Otherwise, there's nothing this character does in the movie that couldn't have been done through a different "synthetic" character (that probably wouldn't have required to be updated technically a few months post-release because there wouldn't have been real-life hurdles in portraying it, to begin with).

I thought the film was reasonably well made, but it did feel like a "greatest hits" package.

If someone from the future had told me—in a darkened theater in 1979, as the original ALIEN was unspooling—there would be nine of these things, I would have (reasonably) laughed in Future Boy's face. In order for such a thing to be true, all those sequels would likely resemble the then-recent Airport movies... starting strong, but then endlessly recycling the originating concept into absurdity until all the parts came off.

And now there are nine of these things, and I do see strewn parts lying about. Looking forward to the Devil's Triangle and Charo being in the tenth installment.
