Would appreciate if HTF members could help out...

I'm writing a story for a Virginia business
magazine about home theaters. I need to give
readers some of what's available, what the
system can deliver, and how much putting it
all together will cost.

Same here. I even live in the same city as Phil A. Will it be a general thing or would much of it apply to Virginia (and where you can get stuff) as well?

I suggest you all provide a brief equipment list along with your system's approximate value. Telling a little about the amount of effort you put into selecting and assembling the components for your system might be helpful, too.

Well, on the lower end of the scale from what I've already seen posted here...

A 6 month old Toshiba 50" Analog rear projection TV
A Toshiba SD-2006 DVD player
A JVC amp/tuner/signal switcher that supports Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS.
Dish 500 satellite system
KLH speakers (4) and sub-woofer (1)

About $1,800 to $2,000 total invested.

-Toshiba 50H81 RPTV
-Pioneer DV-525 DVD player (will I ever upgrade???)
-Energy eXL 26, C2, R speakers
-DIY Stryke 12" Sonosub
-Yamaha 795a receiver as pre/pro
-Anthem MCA-II 5 channel amp
-Mish mash of AudioQuest and AR interconnects
-Home Depot 12 gauge speaker cables

Probably updated versions of this stuff will run $6k total. All basically middle of the road type stuff (price/performance conscious). The DVD player needs a serious upgrade if one ever becomes available that I like.

ok, here it is.
receiver : denon avr2802, i paid 650 bucks shipped, unauthorized dealer. my research was done on htf, based on power rating, price under 700 bucks, 6.1 capability, dolby prologic2 ( only for gamecube, not for anything else ), and intention to upgrade to using power amplifier sometime in the future.
dvd player : panasonic rp56, 220 bucks shipped, authorized dealer. research was done on htf and www.cnet.com based on price, progressive scan capability, and rave reviews. no need for DVD audio or SACD.
speakers :
mains : boston acoustics VR-M50, purchased from ebay, new / shrinkwrapped, 500 bucks shipped. research was done on www.audioreview.com and htf, based on the premise of neutral sound ( i want neutral, period ), size ( 5.25 inch cone ), and looks. these things look really expensive. and also the price.
center : boston acoustics VR-MC, because i had no choice. 500 bucks shipped, also from ebay, new. i always build my HT based on the main speakers. didnt do any research for this one.
rears : a pair of psb image 1b. 200 bucks shipped, b stock, based on price ( cannot afford 4 VR-M50s ), front ported ( gotta put these real close to the wall, otherwise i would have chosen axiom speakers ), size ( 5.25 inch cone ), and color to match the front speakers. i didnt have too many options given these restrictions. i am happy with the psb speakers.
subwoofer : paradigm pdr10, 300 bucks from local shop. research was done on audioreview.com and htf, based on price, and size. i live in apartment. if i had the chance to upgrade, i will upgrade my 20 inch tv first, then the subwoofer.
speaker cables : monster 12g. purchased from ebay, i dont remember the cost. research was done on htf and avsforum, based on the "12g" thing, and the monster brand recognition. i was a newbie back then.
i hope my contribution here really helps.
