I was playing X-Box on my InFocus 4805 and there was a loud popping sound followed by about 10 seconds of burnt smell and the light went out. The projector is running. Was this my first bulb going out? Had about 3,000hrs on it I believe.

My guess would be yes. 3000 hours already? The 4805 hasn't even been out that long.

The "burnt smell" is not, in general, a good thing. Was there any sound of broken glass?

The easy check is, of course, to open the lamp compartment. If the lamp has shattered, try and get as much of the glass out of the projector as possible; glass in the fans is bad.

Isn't the unit supposed to stop functioning after 2000 hours?

I guess you can reset the timer to keep it going?

I think I will just buy a new bulb when it hits 2000 hours. I do not wish for the stuff to pop in that fashion and potentially damage something.

I also read that you do not want to use it past that time anyway because it gets so dim. Was the reduced brightness ever an issue?
