Over the weekend my DRU-10W which I've had since last February has failed whilst burining DVD-R disks. I've tried two differnt Riteks, a Prodisc and an Optodisc dye-based blank and all have failed at different points. What's weird is that it seems OK on DVD-RW and +RW as well as CD blanks.

The Nero log file from one of the failures is:

You're waaay more computer literate than I (I've seen your posts for a long time Rob), so there's no way I can help you.

Computer's self-diagnosis is rarely helpful, the last cd failure I had Nero said "General protection Fault", might as well have told me I got out of bed on the wrong side. [IMG]

If you sent that report to Ahead, would they be able to tell you anything (in the unlikely event a human being looked at it)?

    Anyway, good luck!

I tried another -RW last night and it failed within minutes.

Oh well, good job I've got a Pioneer A07 on it's way :)

So how many DVDs did you manage to burn with this unit before it gave up the ghost?

Not sure. A few hundred, maybe. Probably no more than 500 maximum.

That'll probably be the last Sony kit I buy.

I'm not familiar with that burner...is it external or internal? SCSI or IDE or Firewire or USB?

Maybe you have a bad cable connection? Or perhaps an as-yet undetected virus or spyware is interfering with the burn?

But then again...500 DVD burns...wow. Probably killed the laser (burnt out!).

I hope my DRU500 doesn't bite the dust...of course I only burned 30 or 40 discs. Bring on the dual-layer burners!

It's actually a DW-U10A which was the internal OEM version of the DRU-500. When I say 500 discs I'm talking absolute maximum and it's probably a lot less than that. Either way, it's too short a life span for a burner.

Other things you could try : try replacing the IDE cable, make sure there isn't some new firmware floating around for your drive. Just a couple of random thoughts - I've seen some weird things from failed IDE cables.

    It's fecked.

Seems like the Sony burners tend to blow up pretty quickly.

I'm just happy that they're cheap enough that I won't worry if I can only burn 200 discs before it implodes

$100 for a burner so you figure 50 cents a burn for 200 discs.
