    Disposable DVDs to spin faster

A five-month test of low-cost disposable DVDs has yielded enough positive response from their sale in pizza and convenience store chains to prompt Buena Vista Home Entertainment and its partner Flexplay Technologies Inc. to double its retail presence. "We are extremely happy with the test, which proved that there is a consumer desire to have an alternative to traditional video rental," said Lori MacPherson, BVHE vp brand marketing and product manager. "That's why we are more than doubling our retail test markets and adding additional titles." Detractors of the disposable discs, called ez-D, have cited a lack of top-shelf titles available on the format, which was developed by New York-based Flexplay in cooperation with GE Plastics and is manufactured by Technicolor. The discs are playable for 48 hours.

They are elated by the ability to screw over both the consumer and the environment at the same time. Making more money at the same time is like icing on the cake.

    Wait a sec....

Was I dreaming or was there a report published
a few months back that basically said that the
disposable DVDs were a flop and that stores had
    decided to stop carrying them?

Of all of the trends in DVD that I dislike, this is one of the top two worst.

I too read an article on the slow business for them. I wonder what happened to change Disney's mind so fast.

Maybe they were giving away free pizza with every "purchase". The reports of slow sales never came from the participants, just some articles by reporters I believe.

Gag. Until they lower the $6-7 price for one of these things, I just can't possibly see it doing that well when Wal-Mart has their %5.88 bin that would be a choice for many people.

    Ron,

You weren't dreaming, but Eisner probably is. Market research is used as often to validate what executives want to hear, as it is to find out the truth. Eisner obviously didn't want to hear that this wasn't going to sell greatly (anymore than Dick Sharp did), and so he's no doubt spinning and contorting the numbers to support going forward, no doubt thinking he knows what people want more than they do. A disaster in the making, IMO.

I wonder how many sales have been to people thinking they are getting a full-fledged DVD, only to discover what they really have later on.

Yes, I am sure that, in time, the word will get around that they are only good for two days.

I did notice that the announcement above omitted supermarkets, where sales were reported to be bad. He can just redirect the places they are sold at, but if we're talking Eisner, then his whole vision may very well end up to be a pipe dream - that goes up in smoke!

    Craig-

I almost hurt myself laughing when I read your comment, in fact, I am having to type this slowing because I am still bobbing up and down from chuckling.

    Thanks!
