This question probably comes up a lot, but I am looking for a half decent 5.1 system for about or under $300. My room isn't very large, I have a 42" LCD and a HTPC that handles all Blu-ray, cable, Netflix, etc. so the HDMI pass-through would be nice. Otherwise an optical cable is a possibility. Suggestions?

Basic home-theater-in-a-boxes like LG, Samsug, panasonic, etc. that include the receiver, speakers, subwoofer and Bluray player would fit the budget and the price and features look great but the actual performance doesn't match the hype and if one part fails you have to replace the whole thing. A good receiver/speaker package and a stand alone BluRay player would be much better but finding that for under $300 is going to be tough. Impossible, really. This is the best I could find for the least amount of money. Speakers/sub: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKSKSHT540/Onkyo-SKS-HT540-7.1-channel-Home-Theater-Speaker-System/1.html ($160 + sh) Receiver: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKHTRC230/Onkyo-HT-RC230-5.1-Channel-3-D-Ready-Home-Theater-Receiver/1.html ($129 + sh) It's factory refurbished (with one year warranty). BluRay Player: Magnavox 5130 Recertified (refurbished http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882226030 ($65 free sh) 1 year extended warranty is $9.99 Or check Walmart, Fry's, BestBuy for an in-store deal. This all adds up to about $375 but would perform so much better than a $300 htib. Even this with a cheap BR player would be over budget with shipping and any tax on the player (if bought locally) http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKHTS3400/Onkyo-HT-S3400-5.1-Channel-Home-Theater-Package/1.html

Ok, but I don't need a Bluray player. I already have one in my HTPC. And the parts from ac4l would work except that I would pay another $60 in shipping..

"Ok, but I don't need a Bluray player. I already have one in my HTPC." Somehow I missed that. Well, Amazon has the Onkyo 3400 for $249 shipped. The issue with it is it has a passive subwoofer which isn't as good as a powered one. But it fits the budget. And I still feel it's a better option than the htib's sold at BeatBuy or Fry's.
