Just got a shock to read that actor Bruno Kirby has passed away at the relatively young age of 57. Apparently he had been recently diagnosed with leukemia.

His best known role was probably as Billy Crystal's best friend in When Harry Met Sally. He also did notable work in City Slickers, Good Morning Vietnam, and This Is Spinal Tap. He made an early impression playing the young Clemenza in The Godfather II. Most recently, he did a bit on HBO's "Entourage".

He was an engaging character actor, and I for one always enjoyed his work. R.I.P., Mr. Kirby.

Time to dig out my copy of The Freshman for an in memoriam screening. It's one of Bruno Kirby's funniest performances.

What a terrible loss. So many great performances. The limo driver in Spinal Tap is another.

I think I will also watch WHMS, City Slickers and The Freshman in his honor.

I grew to love him as a kid in City Slickers - seeing it more than 20 times easily.

Stuart Little, Donnie Brasco, Sleepers, City Slickers, Freshman, We're No Angels, When Harry Met Sally, This is Spinal Tap! are just the majority of the films I've seen of him.

I think one of his best performances I've seen of his was in Sleepers - fantastic job.

    He will be missed!

    Oh, no! [IMG]

I absolutely LOVED him as Lieutenant Hawk in Good Morning Vietnam! It took a truly funny and talented guy to play such an "unfunny" character so well, especially given he was going up against Robin Williams. He was excellent in everything I saw him in, including Flesh and Blood, which was a far more serious character than Hawk.

RIP, Bruno, you were one in a million!

In Good Morning, Vietnam he was an absolute hoot. I worked with a guy just exactly like that. He was nice enough, but never smiled and had no sense of humor whatsoever. He was the son of the station's owner so it made things kind of tough. I related to that situation in a big way.

    So long Lt. Hauk. *salutes*

Lt. Steven Hauk: And where you do imagine you're going?
Adrian Cronauer: I'm going to get something to eat.
Lt. Steven Hauk: You ain't got time. You'll stay here and drink instant beverages or something. We promised our viewing audience Nixon highlights by 4:00 PM.
Adrian Cronauer: I've been on the air for four hours. I'm a little hungry.
Lt. Steven Hauk: That's a joke right? I get it.
Adrian Cronauer: No. I'm actually hungry

    ---------------------

Lt. Steven Hauk: Furthermore, you are to stick to playing normal modes of music, not weird stuff. Those who we'd find acceptable here would include Lawrence Welk, Jim Nabors, Mantovani...
    Adrian Cronauer: ...Percy Faith...
Lt. Steven Hauk: Percy Faith... good!... Andy Williams, Perry Como, and certain ballads by Mr. Frank Sinatra.

I enjoyed his Turn as "The Gas Man" on Homicide S4 Finale, he was a suitable foil For Frank Pembleton.

Sad news......I really liked him in When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers. [IMG] I think I'll pull Good Morning Vietnam off the 'to watch' pile this weekend. Rest In Peace, Mr. Kirby.
