LOS ANGELES (May 18, 2017) – Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy”), Robert Pattinson (Twilight franchise), Sienna Miller (Factory Girl), and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) star in Amazon Studio’s THE LOST CITY OF Z, the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett. Certified “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, the film centers on Fawcett (Hunnam), who disappeared in the Amazon while searching for a mysterious city. An epically scaled tale of courage and passion, told in Writer/Director James Gray’s (We Own the Night) classic filmmaking style, THE LOST CITY OF Z is a stirring tribute to the exploratory spirit and a conflicted adventurer driven to the verge of obsession.

THE LOST CITY OF Z is available on Digital HD, Blu-ray™/DVD Combo Pack, Blu-ray, DVD and VOD on July 11. The bonus material included on all formats (except VOD) include feature film commentary by Director James Gray and three featurettes: “Adventure in the Jungle,” “From Novel to Screen,” and “Expedition Journal.”

    Synopsis:
THE LOST CITY OF Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization. Supported by his devoted wife (Sienna Miller), son (Tom Holland) and aide-de-camp (Robert Pattinson) — Fawcett returns time and again to his beloved jungle in search of the lost city. What he discovered became legendary.

This is one of the best films of 2017 as trumpeted in the press release above. I have not seen much talk about it and it did not last long in theaters. I believe it was released up against other films that buried it.

You should know this film is beautifully shot on 35 mm film and many scenes are lit by firelight. This is a fascinating story based on a nonfiction book that is a great read. Of course the film drops a lot of the stuff from the book that provides historical context to Percy Fawcett's story and focuses on his obsession with finding the lost city of the title. It's sort of sad that a film this good sort of vanishes from public view so quickly and has virtually no support. Sure it is not a CGI comic book fest with giant monsters and lots of explosions...but there are scenes of the Battle of Somme inspired by Kubrick's Paths of Glory that are quite harrowing...and the picture is not aimed at 16 year olds. However, I don't think we have a lot of 16 year olds posting here.

I am hoping Robert Harris will cover this one in one of his A Few Words About... pieces because while I could tell you how beautiful this film is I think it would mean a lot more coming from him. Plus I would just like to read his thoughts on this one.

Bargain priced at Amazon for under $16.00 if you are looking for a really good story with great photography that will make you think...well...here you go. It will provide a great night in your home theater.
