I was just wondering is the Braveheart DVD a nice disc? I'm seriously considering purchasing this because I like the movie but I would like to know first if it is a good disc.
    Thanks.

The disc is just fine. Picture and sound quality are great, the making-of documentary is interesting, and I liked the commentary as well (though some found it boring). No reason not to pick it up if you're a fan of the film, I just wish they'd done a two-disc set.

Tom is pretty much spot on there. Quite a good disc, and the supplements though minimal are nice to have for this great film. I was a little miffed with the transfer but all in all a good job. I'm down here in Australia atm and got to take a look at the R4 version which is indeed a 2 disc set with the supplements moved over to the 2nd. Picture quality is slightly better...

The Japan release of Braveheart is also a 2-disc set with supplements moved to second disc. The result is higher bit rate for the movie with slightly better image. Japan is NTSC. Except for Warner, however, price of DVDs are high in Japan.

I knew that Braveheart was released as a 2-disc set in other regions, but the material wasn't any different, was it? What I want is a true 2-disc set, with the first disc dedicated to DD 5.1/DTS, commentaries and picture quality, and a bunch of extras on the second disc.

Buy it - if you really enjoyed the movie.
The picture is fine, with some grain here and there but nothing overly distracting. Supplements are fairly straightforward. There is a short documentary that would please most fans of the film, although it never goes into too much detail. The commentary is worth a listen, especially if you are a fan of the movie. It has long pauses but when Mel speakes it is generally entertaining.
Also you get a pair of trailers. And that is about it.
I got the disc for the movie, and didn't care much for the supplements. Its a great movie and as long as its in 5.1 and anamorphic, I am a happy camper. Plus I don't forsee any better version coming out in the near future. So just get the disc I say.

I was told that due to the running length of the movie 177 minutes, and the inclusion of a documentary on the disc in NTSC just barely allowed it to fit onto a single disc. Due to the increased resolution of PAL, the bitrate needed to be just a tad bit higher to maintain the picture quality, but this caused the documentary to have to be moved over to a second disc.
I may be wrong, but I remember reading that on one of these HT boards when the disc first came out.

In my opinion the picture quality is a bit above average. The sound is quite good.
Of course, the movie itself is pretty darn good too!

Paramount could revisit it in my opinion though the gritty look was intentional so, it's a close call.
The laserdisc, while noisier and with less saturated colors, had a more natural look.
i'd love to hear Horner's score in DTS. The pcm soundtrack sounds better than the score on the dvd. And the music is VERY important in this movie.

The only real issue I have the video is the speckles of dirt on the print, but that's about it. Image quality destroys the soft, bleary LaserDisc.

I had the chance to test the first battle scene and the scene of the throwing the stones [IMG] with an HTPC and the laserdisc on a Barco 808S: you'd be surprised, trust me ( or don't )
