The Sony blu ray picture wasn't reference quality so the odds are that this will be worth the upgrade. Any information about supplements, or is this a bare-bones release? Pity that Criterion weren't able to upgrade their laserdisc title. Some guy posted on Reddit that he'd met John Singleton in 2017 and asked him the chances of Boyz coming back to Criterion for a DVD/Blu-ray release. According to Singleton, there was no way that's ever happening because Sony is making too much money on rereleasing it themselves every few years. Might be the case - I'm pretty sure Criterion would have grabbed the opportunity, if they had been offered it. Their laserdisc wasn't stacked with supplements but it had a Singleton commentary track, a couple of deleted scenes and some audition videos. After Singleton's death earlier this year, it would have been a very good opportunity to assess his career, particularly the impact of this debut. Amazing that he was only 22 when he made it.

For those interested, there's a fantastic, in-depth article in Vanity Fair from 2016 about the film

Steven Spielberg told Singleton that one of the death scenes was one of the most powerful he’d ever seen on film.

After Singleton passed away so early in life I was wondering if this great movie would get a 4K/UHD release. Last July, the HD digital was on sale for $4.99 so I decided to purchase it because I thought it was a good possibility that Sony would released it in 4K/UHD.

    SYNOPSIS
BOYZ N THE HOOD is the critically acclaimed coming-of-age story of growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. It is a place where harmony co-exists with adversity, especially for three young men growing up there: Doughboy (Ice Cube), an unambitious drug dealer; his brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a college-bound teenage father; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who aspires to a brighter future beyond "The Hood." In a world where a trip to the store can end in death, the friends have diverse reactions to their bleak surroundings. Tre's resolve is strengthened by a strong father (Larry Fishburne) who keeps him on the right track. But the lessons Tre learns are put to the ultimate test when tragedy strikes close to home, and retaliation seems the only recourse.
