Bought Alien(s) 1-3 for $39 used, good deal?

I heard about the 9 disc set coming at the end of the year, but I figured it would cost about $100-$125.

Can anyone confirm the price of the new set?

At that point I decided to look for used copies instead, since the transfers are 16x9 and good even by today's standards.

Extras are obviously limited, but it sounds like Fox will release the new extras disc(s) separately anyway.

Anybody know what that might cost?

Think I got the second part wrong.

The 'Alien Saga' extras-only product has apparently been around for awhile and only covers the first movie (I assume).

Personally, I find it hard to believe it will sell over $80 (especially being only 4 movies and some extras).

$39 is a decent price for what you got, but... I expect the box set will be streeting for about $60-70 during release week. And each movie has its own extras disk which is going to contain a LOT more than what you just bought. I very much doubt those will be sold separately from the movies. If you really want all the Aliens you can stand, I would return those 3 you just bought and wait for the box set.

Of course, it's also possible that the box set won't contain all the extras from the current releases....

Early rumors place the SRP for the Alien Quadrilogy at $80. I'd expect it to street for $60 or so first week.

Screened all three movies and was happy with the A/V quality.

Was surprised at how well the 3rd movie held up, very nice.

The lack of any disc art really kills me though, how boring.

Extras are minimal, but I almost prefer that in horror/thriller situation.

Watching the guy in the Alien suit take a coffee break kinda de-mystifys the experience.

My original thought was that the price difference between a used and new set would about cover the cost of the Indy boxset.

I figured that Indy is definitely mass market and should be selling cheap at Walmart week one (BTTF was $34, I think).

No doubt, Best Buy will have the Alien set on sale as well, but previous Fox Five-Star releases were typically way over priced.

    We'll see...

Since when is disc art usually corny action shots? It's pretty much always the logo, a headshot, or the poster.

What people like or dislike in disc art probably an interesting topic unto itself...

But, I for one, don't really care for the early Fox 'bare disc' aesthetic.

A quick scan of my collection (Cast Away, quills, Sexy Beast) seems to indicate they abandoned this approach in 2000.

I was hoping the Alien series might have been an early exception.

No such luck, but I knew what I was getting for the money.

Since "Alien: The Director's Cut" is coming to theaters, I would have to think it will be sold individually.

I had fox titles in mind. The Disc art on SPEED and DIE HARD 5 star editions come to mind. Total crap. But in all honesty, its a small gripe, i dont loose much sleep over disc art. I would just rather see the studios keep them less cluttered looking.

Since I posted on this earlier, I figured a re-visit was in order.

In short, I'm really shocked at how cheap the new set is streeting.

Best deal I've seen so far is Coconuts/Strawberries/Fey (whatever their called): $54.99!

That is after an annoying $15 mail-in rebate, however.

Next best B&M deal is WalMart for $68, I think.

I might be able to get $21 in trade for my old trilogy discs.

But that would still leave at least a $30 shortfall.

Thing is, I'm not unhappy with my existing set and like the idea of having a case for each movie (they're not stored together on my rack).

I do watch extras sometimes, but just as often I don't even put in the 'second disc'.

    Decisions...Decisions.

Deep Discount has it for $58.50 delivered, no tax-(maybe in IL,) if you use the DVDTALK or DVD SALE coupon at checkout.
