By 1953, John Farrow had made the lion’s share of his movies as a director with Paramount Pictures; some of his best movies with the studio include Wake Island (1942), China (1943), The Big Clock (1948), Night Has a Thousand Eyes (also 1948) and Submarine Command (1951). The last movie he made for the studio before becoming a free-lance director – with a future Oscar win for co-writing the screenplay for the Best Picture winning Around the World in 80 Days (1956) – was a nod to his own Australian roots, Botany Bay.
