I agree, the show has gone downhill this season. Of course, I loves Season One, and I'll continue to watch this show for a long time.

What I don't understand is how these teachers can afford nice apartments in the city?!? We know that Harry Senate, Lauren Davis, and Michael Rapaport's character all live in the city (well, at least Rapaport had a roommate). I have several friends who work in the Boston public school system, and I know that they don't make enough to live in the city without having a few roommates.

The apartment thing is common for all shows in the city. Just look at Friends.

My guess is that it's just a matter of space. You can't shoot a TV show in a tiny little set on a regular basis. You have to have room for the characters to move around and do stuff. So, they give them big apartments.
