Hi,

Have a bose 3-2-1 system. All audio (Sony Bravia HDTV, Sony CD player, Bose FM/DVD) god thru the Bose. A Sony RM-VL600 remote operates all the components. Problem:

The volume levels for a given BOSE volume setting (0-100) are very different. For instance, on TV, level 40 is barely audible; when switching to FM, it is too loud.

How can I change setup so all component volumes are about same for a given Bose setting? TIA for help.

In my experience, different inputs always give different volume levels. I'm not sure if that option exists. The way I deal with it on my AVR is to set startup volume levels for each input.

Like Mike said above, with more advanced receivers, you can adjust the input levels. Your Bose system does not have that feature.

Why are they different levels? Because Dolby Digital, DTS and other surround sound formats are recorded 10db lower than PCM digital so there is more dynamic range. FM and other analog sources are can be all over the place when discussing levels but they are normally on the louder side. And speaking of louder, with the current HDTV broadcasts it is easier to tell the difference. The programs are in DD while the commercials (especially the local auto dealers) are converted from analog and recorded extra loud to get your attention. They blast me out of my seat when they come on. Thank goodness for a DVR with commercial skip.

There is actually a rather interesting editorial in the latest Sound ad Vision mag regarding commercial sound levels....I was just reading it this afternoon.
