Some perspective:

I remember when the original Bose 901 Direct/Reflecting® speaker system hit the market back in 1968. In those days, I was cruising along with a KLH "portable stereo" before I could earn enough money from summer jobs to get my first "real" audio system.

So I was intrigued when I read those first reviews of the 901 in HiFi/Stereo Review and High Fidelity. Even back then, the former magazine had always been accused of giving enthusiastic recommendations for every product it reviewed, while the latter was considered less beholden to advertisers.

Imagine my surprise when Stereo Review's chief tester, Dr. Julian "I never met an amplifer I didn't like" Hirsch was—gasp!—critical of Bose's debut effort, decrying the sounds of twenty-foot-wide pianos and voices that seemed to eminate from all points in space (and time).

He called the 901s "musical instruments" as opposed to music reproducers.

Wow, I thought to myself. Hirsch wrote his first pan.

Soon, a nearby audio dealer received some 901s, and I schlepped over to hear them. Though initially dazzled by the omnidirectional-like sound, it seemed to my young ears that KLH's portable "stereo" got me much closer to the audio nirvana I was seeking in my own quest.

It was interesting to note in the following years how reviews of Bose "speakers" rarely appeared in the audio press, though their ad pages were sprinkled with expensive four-color Bose adverts.

(Years later, Stereo Review writer and reviewer Steve Simels explained that his magazine didn't review products it thought wouldn't receive much positive notice. Hence, no Bose reviews for the most part. The editorial and advertising departments were able to continue their peaceful coexistence.)

On a more personal note, the woman I was dating earlier this year called me to talk about putting together a little audio system to complete her 20-inch Sony WEGA-based minitheater (which includes a Sony 360 DVD player). Sandra was telling me enthusiastically about some speakers she had just heard that day.

Bose.

"They're so cute!" she enthused. "You'd love them, Jack."

Thoughts racing through my head, I tried answering with what I considered a fascinating if incomplete history of speakers systems and home audio, covering the past three decades.

Sandra, who is a very intelligent graphic-design artist, became short-tempered, complaining about my overuse of model numbers.

However, economic considerations put off her purchase, and the subject of Bose has since not come up.

Life is perilous sometimes.

Great post Jack. I always wondered what the take on Bose speakers was when they first came out. What can be said for a company that hasn't changed a damn thing since before we even landed on the moon? Are they so good that after 34 years no changes have been needed (other than slight revisions) or do they keep them so that babyboomer J6P continues to spread the word of his fondness for these from such a innocent time?

Many people here know what its like to try to change the mind of a Bose Believer. Actually its not even about changing their mind, its about them keeping an open mind to other products. I have been learning that its a fruitless arguement. They want to spend $2000.00 - $4000.00 dollers on it so let them. Once they get it at home and listen to it now they have something to compare it too. Some background.

Then these people fall into 2 camps. Either they realize they spent too much for lackluster sound or they keep their head up their ass and tout Bose glories. A lot of people do realize that somethings amiss and do the upgrade.

Either way, with that product sold, Bose has already won.

Each year millions of unsuspecting people come in contact with a highly contagious virus known as Eboseila.

This aurally and visually transmitted virus can be found in thousands of populated cities around the world; embedded in periodicals, on the surfaces of store shelving, and possibly even in the homes of many of your neighbors. Leading studies have shown that Eboseila will cause chronic adaptiquenosis in 95% of people coming in contact with the Eboseila bacteria.

Adaptiquenosis is the leading cause of partial auditory blindness, cochlea irritability and chronic listener fatigue.

Unsuspecting carriers may transmit this disease to friends, family and even complete strangers without even realizing that they, themselves, are carriers.

But there is hope.....

with Paradigmazol.

Paradigmazol is recommended by leading auditory disease specialists, and has helped thousands of people recover from adaptiquenosis with virtually no negative side effects. Paradigmazol is available without a prescription and is sold in many fine stores.

So, ask your specialist about Paradigmazol today, and don’t let adaptiquenosis change the way you live.

Warning: Paradigmazol has been shown to cause aural excitement, increased heart rate and may cause salivation in a small percentage of users. Ask your doctor before trying this or any other adaptiquenosis fighting drug.

This is the funniest post to date -- I don't post much as there are much smarter people to answer questions. But, the information I glean off of these pages has saved me mucho dinero.

About two years a go I read a web page some ex Bose employer out up where he posted the SKU for one of the acoustimass products with the actual purchase cost for the parts into the page. the whole cost came to something like 100 bucks for everything including packaging, speaker wire, and pamphlets.

I should have copied that page for no other reason than to show how much quality ends up in those things.

I love the comment about 500 engineers working on R&D -- that still has me laughing.
I personally think that he was looking at a room with 500 lawyers -- do a search sometime on Bose lawsuits its a great way to waste an afternoon. They sued JBL for putting ports in their N and S series speakers.

Great stuff keep it coming

J
