OK, I went by a Bose store recently, and decided to umm, do some "opposition research." I really wanted to hear that "9ft wide violin". So, I ventured into their demo room, and started playing tunes. Wow!

    It was like mud.

So, I'm thinking that the speakers aren't set up properly. They aren't supposed to be that close to the wall. I know that my own speakers, which are ostensibly "bookshelf", are really designed to be placed on stands, far from the wall. Because of this, the the manufacturer refers to them as monitors.

Any thoughts? Am I listening to a properly setup 901 pair? Or can I honestly say that I have heard the Bose, and the Bose failed to measure up?

You may want to run a search on Bose.

The 901s are a pretty horrendously designed speaker, basically. I don't know anyone who would seriously consider using such a device in any attempt at audio reproduction.

There are much better bose speakers, and that's not really saying much at all.
