Am I calling you specifically a name or your comment? I'm calling your COMMENT ignorant as it regards people who enjoyed the film as being classed in either two categories. It seems to me you should watch your manners.

It is a carefully considered and well-grounded OPINION, and not one in the majority. Apparently if we don't agree with your negative opinion of CR we're not 'analytical'. Some might interpret your words as saying we don't use our brains, because if we did we'd agree with you. Talk about insulting.

Have you considered eschewing this topic altogether? You've already ruined other James Bond thread with this attitude (right down to the same witty retorts), and frankly it's gotten beyond tiresome. You dislike Casino Royale. We get it. Perhaps you should move on to more pleasurable pursuits.

I'm laughing at the male characters because they're so pussywhipped I can't believe in them.

But I do appreciate your taking the time to discuss the film on its merits, Adam, instead of stooping to name calling.

Richard, do you have any idea how tiresome it is to see you post this argument in every thread that mentions the name Bond? And I don't think I've ever, EVER, seen anyone agree with you. Please stop.

I guess I'm not interested in another movie about men putting women in their place. Which isn't to say that I'm interested in a movie about women putting men in their place. To me, Casino Royale is a film about women trying to put men in their place and failing because, when it comes right down to it, hunting is still a man's game. Well, actually I don't think it's about that at all. But since the sexual politics seem to be your relentless focus, that's my take on that facet.

Without insulting you or my fellow posters, I'm going to withdraw from this debate so this thread can return to discussing Quantum of Solace.

I didn't want to get into this debate either, as Adam has said. There is one thing that I'll add and then I'll leave this. As I've read all the novels, there is one thing that did bother me about the film version of Casino Royale. It's how M and Bond interact. Bond always respects M and behaves that way with him. M is Bond's boss and he treats him with great respect in the novels.

Brosnan played it this way with Dench. Connery certainly did, and Moore did more or less. And Lazenby and Dalton too.

I found more than those comments rude and inappropriate so I suggest everyone learn to behave themselves in a less confrontational manner in the future.

By the way, if you don't like CR and you have made your opinion known then please move on as this thread should not be hijacked for that purpose. I believe CR has it's own discussion thread.

Wierd title for a Bond movie.

I happen to really like most of the Bond film titles.

Dr. No,From Russia With Love,Thunderball,You Only Live Twice,On Her Majesty's Secret Service,Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me,For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights,Licence to Kill,Tomorrow Never Dies,The World is Not Enough,Die Another Day,Casino Royale

All GREAT titles IMHO

I remember those reports too, circa 1988-1989. I also am pretty sure there were movie posters produced using "Licence Revoked" (note the British spelling of "Licence"). The word was that the average American didn't know the word "revoked" so it was changed to "To Kill."

I always thought the title was related to the John Garder novel "License Renewed." Much was made in the 80s about possible films from that series of books. I still think it is a good idea. "For Special Services" and "Nobody Lives Forever" were great stories.

I like the use of "Quantum of Solace." With the same team from Casino on board, I am very much looking forward to this movie. (FWIW, I thought CR was the best Bond since Thunderball.)

Adam, I enjoyed your analysis. I don't love the title, because quantum makes me think of physics. In general terms, it means a "large quantity", so I understand the usage.

In truth, I don't care either way. I'm just excited about the film and the direction it's going in. One of the films I most anticipate watching this year!

I'm looking forward to this, despite the admittedly odd sounding title (I'll get used to it). In my opinion, CR was the best Bond movie since For Your Eyes Only, which itself was the best since OHMSS and the original Connery movies. I prefer my Bond movies lite on the gadgetry, and some of the later movies, especially the Moore ones, relied far too heavily on it. Really, movies like Moonraker ended up looking more like comic books. CR was a welcome break. I hope they do all further movies in this mold.

The main thing I don't like about the title is it doesn't really roll off the tongue well like the other Bond titles do. When I went to the theater to see "Casino Royale", I said I wanted to see "Casino Royale" at the ticket counter. When I go to see "Quantum of the Solace", I'll probably just ask for a ticket to "Bond".

I never knew "quantum" could be associated with anything other than the infinitesimally small.

Official plot synopsis

This synopsis may contain plot spoilers.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE continues the high octane adventures of James Bond (DANIEL CRAIG) in CASINO ROYALE.

Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (JUDI DENCH) interrogate Mr White (JESPER CHRISTENSEN) who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.

Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (OLGA KURYLENKO), a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (MATHIEU AMALRIC), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation.

On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world’s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (JOAQUIN COSIO). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.

In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene’s sinister plan and stop his organisation.

True, but I preferred Desmond Llewelyn in that role, and can't really see anyone else doing it, even John Cleese...

I am glad that they stopped using BMWs, though. Bond has to drive something British, preferably an Aston Martin, although I did love the Series I Lotus Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me.

What? You want faithfulness to the character to be more important than marketing concerns? :)
