Well, look on the bright side: Chapek has been with the company longer and he came in through the theme parks and home video, not ABC.

    That's literally all I've got.

The Disney+ launch went better than expected faster than expected and that was always going to be his last major initiative. The guy who’s been putting off his retirement for years deciding to start retiring doesn’t strike me as being anything bad.

Six posts and no one has asked if Song Of The South will get released now?! I mean I know that movie will never get released but still, I can't believe that someone hasn't asked yet.

EDIT: And this will be more on Twitter but I expect this to somehow be the fault of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson, Kathleen Kennedy, etc.

The timing of this seems surprising since I thought he just resigned last year to continue through 2021.

It will be interesting to see what happens next.

He always kept pushing it because a) they were working on this big direct to consumer initiative and b) they didn’t have a successor in mind. Those things have both been addressed.

Think of it more like a parliamentary system where the head resigns when the work is done, rather than a presidential system where you serve your full term no matter what.

Well, Chapek was running the home video department all the years it didn't get released. I'll believe it's coming when I hold the official release in my hand.

Although it is true angry Star Wars fans seem to be more on their mind.

It’s not coming officially now, it’s likely never to come officially, and there is no other content producer anywhere in the world where deciding not to release one single solitary old movie gets the kind of attention this does.

I simply do not see the point in assessing the company or any of its employees solely through the lens of whether or not they care to release a mostly forgotten, dated production on physical media.

In fairness, no other content producer has an explicit prohibition on releasing one of its more famous titles, which played a crucial role in developing the company's image and brand.

You still hear "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" regularly at Disney parks. Song of the South is the basis for Splash Mountain, one of Disney's most popular attractions. Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox, and Br'er Bear continue to pop up in Disney projects. The tremendous box office success of Song of the South was key to Walt Disney creating his own distribution arm and ending his association with RKO.

If Warner Bros. had a policy that prevented Casablanca from seeing the light of day, there would be similar attention paid.

Surprising news. Iger talked in the past about running for president. It's too bad the timing didn't work out better. He's more charismatic and photogenic than any of the others and that goes a long way to winning.

There will be continuity at Disney. Both the previous and the current CEOs are called Bob.

Howard Hughes' erratic behavior also contributed to that. Disney didn't start its own distribution company until 1953, though, seven years after the film's release, and most of its profits were made through reissues. They even released the first few fully live-action features up to that point, so they stuck it out as long as they could. It's debatable whether RKO's problems compounded Disney being short on money because of WWII, but by the time Cinderella come out they had enough again … until Walt needed seed money for Disneyland. Needless to say, he didn't go to Hughes for it.

Eventually, when RKO finally collapsed, they bought out half of its Japanese division.

Seems like an unusually hostile message as an initial message from a member who just joined today.
