Will someone settle a bet for me (I'm betting myself here).

Are the PCM tracks on Blu-ray really uncompressed or compressed with a lossless algorithm (e.g., win-zip style)?

I know it doesn't matter (except that the latter would be better for total space and transfer rate), but it's been bugging me.

Thanks,
Reagan

PCM is the file they would use to create the compressed version of TrueHD or DTS-MA lossless. Basically PCM is the digital master. Wether any track PCM is the ultimate version would depend on wether the track was originally 24 bit or 16 bit and wether the PCM track we get is the same bit depth.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the response. I understand your point, but my question is: when the PCM track is put on the disc (for the Blu-ray movies that have one, like Casino Royale), is it uncompressed or compressed with lossless codecs (like a winzip compression)?
