Hi,

Newbie to the forum & not nearly as technologically savvy as ya'll on this forum. So, I have a 65" Mitsu Diamond Rear Projection 1080i, which comes with a DVI input. It still "runs" like a champ and would hate to dump it because of inputs.

As I understand it, DVI has the same video qualities as HDMI (just doesn't carry audio). I bought a cable/converter.

My question: will I suffer any degradation in video quality on my 1080i vs 1080p (I was told by someone that it won't work, which doesn't make sense to me). Simply put, will Blu-Ray work on my set.

Thank you in advance for any assistance provided

The simple answer is that Blu-Ray will work on your set. Most (if not all) BD players have menu options that allow output such as 1080i or 720p.

An open question as to the differences between 1080i and 1080p. Likely you won’t be able to tell the difference—and even if you can, 1080i provides a great picture.

An HDMI to DVI converter will work fine, so long as your TV is HDCP compliant.

Odds are your set, like most CRT-based televisions, only produces interlaced images. A CRT set could be made to handle progressive scanning, but at the time your Mits was designed the highest resolution source anyone anticipated dealing with was 1080i - that remains the highest broadcast resolution in the ATSC spec. Nobody at the time anticipated Blu Ray or computer files or dedicated cable channels capable of delivering 1080p (or higher), so neither manufacturers nor consumers would have seen any benefit in the added cost of a 1080p television. Fixed-pixel TV designs like LCD, nearly all plasmas and non-CRT projection systems are inherently progressive - they can't do interlaced images - so they automatically upconvert (or downconvert) all inputs to their native resolution.

Regards,

Joe

Thank you both for your response. I thought so, but just needed the confirmation provided.

Now, do I use an HDMI switch or upgrade my AV Receiver :D

Cheers
