Digital Playground one of the biggest porn companies has announced they will release on Blu-Ray. The first adult studio to commit to either format. Porn industry is big and which format they pick will have a large affect on which format succeeds as long as there are horny dudes. This is good news on many levels.

This will have a positive effect on the porn industry. Not every performer is going to look good under the scrutiny of hi-def, so they will have to improve their standards. :D

Um, do we REALLY need high def porn? Some parts of Ron Jeremy need to stay at 480p, or less if at all possible!

Oh yeah, boobjob scars, stretch marks and hairy man-ass at 1080p...

I think it may be time give up porn altogether. Yikes.

Will dudes get rid of their classic stash in a trunk in the basement, hidden under mom's shawls and such? - Election.

Do we really need it?

Probably.

Kind of takes it full circle. Porn used to be watched on film in theaters, at higher resolution than the video formats available up to now.

Yes, and the quality of "talent" was probably a little higher, too. It's a rare porn star now that stands up to scrutiny as well as Marilyn Chambers did back in the day.

High Def Porn, don't think I can handle that. Way too much information on screen. The last thing I ever want to see is the clarity of another man's semen. My guess these actors will go through a selection process with minimal imperfections on their bodies.

I think... most porn stars of today (for the major porn studios, anyway) are going to look quite sensational in high-def, which brings a level of 3D to the proceedings.

Are you kidding? Porn being available on VHS is one of the things that killed Beta, when Sony wouldn't license the format to porn producers. It is also one of the seldom-mentioned factors in DVD taking off in a big way. It's a huge driver in these things, like it or not. Lots of people like to act moralistic about porn, but they buy it anyway. I'm sure there will at least be a curiosity factor in for Blu-Ray pornography. This is one of the announcements I've been waiting to see that would signal Blu-Ray's eventual dominance.

It might also make the production cost of porn increase quite a bit, too. Even at 1080i resolution, porn stars will have to look much better than now on average. The fact Digital Playground supports this tells me they've been preparing for the jump to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray formats for quite some time.

In what parallel universe? The porn producers didn't need a license from Sony to buy equipment to run off Beta copies of their movies. Only the equipment manufacturers needed licenses. What killed Beta was Sony's refusal to license the format to other manufacturers. JVC licensed VHS to everyone and his brother (many of whom made cheap, low-quality decks which led to the myth that Beta was inherently far superior to VHS, when in fact top-of-the-line VHS decks were almost as good as Beta and they were a hell of a lot cheaper. On the small TVs of the day, most people couldn't tell the difference or didn't care.)

Initially video rental stores stocked movies (including porn) in both VHS and Beta, which was expensive. (I was friends with a guy who ran a video store at the time and I helped him set up his inventory system.) The competition on the VHS side drove the prices down, while Sony continued to charge a premium for its Beta decks. With more people renting VHS, video stores started buying titles in VHS only. The cycle becamse self-sustaining. Video stores shifte to VHS because that's what people were asking for. People in the market for VCRs saw their local video store stocked only or mostly VHS, so when they bought their first deck it was VHS, and the video stores saw even more demand for that format. Beta was just gradually squeezed out.

Porn had a lot to do with getting the pre-recorded video business - and especially the rental market - off the ground (VCRs were orginally sold as replacements for 8mm cameras and projectors, not to watch pre-recorded movies.) But it had nothing to do with the demise of Beta as a consumer format.

If anybody killed Beta it was Sony.

Regards,

Joe

Yeah....., a little too much ;) just kidding of course. I do remember the adult theaters were quality theaters with plush carpeting and large screens. It wasn't until the early to mid 80s when thing went down hill as far as care was concerned. Anyway, I stop buying porn about two years ago and my library consisted of 4 VHS cassette and one terribly recorded DVD. I might get just one on HD-DVD or Blue Ray just to see.
