With Netflix doing so well, it was only a matter of time before Blockbuster started doing something similar. Blockbuster is currently testing subscription plans similar to Netflix in a few markets. In NYC, they're testing the DVD Freedom Pass which lets you pay $19.99 a month for unlimited dvd rentals, up to 2 at a time. Or $24.99 to have up to 3 dvd's out at a time. You can have a dvd checked out for up to 30 days. Past 30 days, you're still charged a late fee. Blockbuster already has something similar for videogames called the Games Freedom Pass. If Blockbuster can combine the two programs and let you have unlimited dvd AND videogame rentals for $19.99/$24.99 a month, it'll be very tempting to switch from Netflix! Neflix will still have a couple advantages. A better selection of dvd's. And being able to do everything online and not have to drive somewhere. But I think it's safe to say Blockbuster will have the edge in availability of recent releases over Netflix.
Here's a couple article links which mention the Blockbuster dvd subscription plans...

If BB increase there selection of older movies and continues their very slow and cautious move to OAR from MAR, I'd probably go for the 19.99 pass.

That's horrible news. DVD inventory is still light at best (about 30% of our local store's inventory) and this will only drain it even more.

You're right, if they expand this program they're gonna really need to ramp up their inventories, both in number of titles and numbers of copies per title.
