I urge all to follow BB's own advice RENTING IS BETTER THAN BUYING. Will you REALLY watch a DVD more than once?
when they make offers such as the following....

Blockbuster will match any Potter price
By Jennifer Netherby
MAY 24 | In a move to compete more aggressively with sell-through specialists, Blockbuster has said it will match any advertised price for the VHS or DVD of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
If customers find a local retail advertisement listing the video at a lower price than Blockbuster is offering, the rentailer will match it. Blockbuster stores are pricing it at $16.99 on VHS and $19.99 on DVD. The promotion marks a first for the company.
"We're looking at a couple different promotions with this title," a Blockbuster spokeswoman said. "There's a lot of excitement around this title, and we're looking to create an irresistible item for the customer."
Blockbuster has not announced price-matching plans for any other titles. Harry, from Warner Home Video, streets May 28 with an SRP of $26.99 on DVD and $24.99 on VHS.
Blockbuster will also run a "Rent It, Like It, Buy It" deal for the title, offering consumers who rent the DVD to buy a previously viewed copy for $9.99 a few weeks later. The title will be guaranteed to be available for rent or customers will receive a free rental.
Some Blockbuster stores will open at midnight or early morning on May 28 with special activities planned for kids. Other chains running midnight events include Wal-Mart Stores, Kmart Stores, Hastings Entertainment, Borders Stores and Musicland Stores' MediaPlay.
Amazon.com said it has received 100,000-plus preorders for the Harry DVD, a record for the e-tailer.
:rolleyes

What baffles me is that isn't Viacom the parent company of both Ballbuster and Paramount? So here's one subsidiary going out of their way to hurt another
This could be why Paramount DVDs are also the most expensive. (at least in my experience)

Saw the same ad on a bus in the Lakeview area of Chicago...
There was one last part of the ad that read:
"Rent 4 DVDs for the price of 1."
Taken out of context, that could mean that I can walk into any Blockbuster, bring up 4 DVDs and expect to pay the price of one rental. Ah, truth in advertising... :) :) :)
Ironically, the bus was at a stop right outside my local Blockbuster.

I think it's good to rent some films. I rent films on DVD that I have never seen before and want to judge. It beats watching a shitty pan-and-scanned VHS tape...

I wonder how badly Blockbuster is being hurt by the fact that the number of people buying films instead of renting them has gone through the roof since the DVD format became such a huge success? It has had to have some effect on their bottom line, and that will only get worse once VHS continues down the path to obsolescense.

I really thought that buying over renting was the biggest catalyst of the downfall of DIVX. DVD IS a buyers market but there are times I wish I would learn the way of the rental. But I just have to get my fix and nothing less than a DVD purchase will do it!!!

I am very much enjoying getting more and more TV shows on DVD in complete season sets. It has almost become a passion to collect all of the series I always enjoyed, it is the completeist in me I suppose! While we don't have a BB in town yet we do have two other rental stores that also sell DVDs plus a Walmart. But I buy mostly online for the prices. Rental just seems to be more of a hassle to me than it is worth. IF a BB comes to town I doubt if I will even darken their doorstep.
