I e-mailed Blockbuster the other day at the sugeestion of another thread, expressing my displeasure with their policy of Pan & Scam only. Well, Blockbuster called me at work today. Actually a district manager called. His answers were interesting to say the least.

First he asked me what I meant by "OAR" which I explained as seeing a movie in its original aspect ratio as intended by the director. It seemed like a test, cause he appeared satisfied that I knew what I was talking about.

He said that he prefers OAR and that because of how they purchase, they at present only will purchase P&S if its one way or the other (due to preceived market study's), HOWEVER, next year since DVD will become the mainstay at Blockbuster, they will purchase titles in both formats to satisfy all their customers. I don't know how true this is, but he seemed sincere.

I also suggested a display in the locations showing the differences between OAR and P&S, which would help educate people. He agreed that this should happen (no commitment), and further acknowledged that as Hi-Def T.V.s gain popularity, people will want widescreen.

As I said, I don't know if this guy was blowing smoke about BB stocking both, but he seemed sincere and knowledgeable in the subject.

Well, if this guy was on the level, that's great news.
    We'll see.

I doubt that my writing back will do any good...but it made me feel better...

He actually tried to call yesterday but I was at lunch so he called back today, which also impressed me. Like I said, He seemed sincere, but as John said, "wait and see". Hopefully our voices are being heard.

I see this topic discussed quite a bit here and I'm a little confused. To the best of my knowledge there are only a small handful of discs that are P&S only and all of those seem to be aimed at kids. The only discs I have ever come across that didn't have widescreen were some early releases like Bonnie & Clyde and Parenthood. Are there really that many, or are they all ones that I just don't have any interest in?

National Lampoon's CHRISTMAS VACATION is, apparently, coming out in P & S only. There seems to be a growing # of such releases.

I got the standard reply e-mail so I replied to it, along with the previous response indicating that I don't want a computer-generated response.

He is on the level but he is really saying anything we don't already know. As more 16 x 9 TV's are sold pan and scan becomes distinct. We all know that what we want is fair treatment right now, not when the tide changes. The studios need to stop releasing titles like the Silician in pan and scan only. If they release a title in pan and scan they should also include an anamorphic version.

I don't know, call me cynical but I have a hard time believing that DM at Blockbuster wasn't giving you lip service. Perhaps the company's waking up to the fact that they can't ignore all of us and have to formulate some kind of response, so they're calling some of us in the hope it gets the rest of us "off their back." I hope I'm wrong about this!

This is the automated-response email Blockbuster sent me when I complained about their lack of widescreen DVD's on their shelves:

So in other words, Blockbuster is trying to appeal to the dumbest and most ignorant members of society - the lowest common denominator.

This reminds me of an adage I once heard:

"Just think of how stupid your average person is - and then remember that HALF of all people are even stupider than that!"

I swear, if I have to read that friggen memo again, I will not be held responsable for my actions!
"Our employees are empowered and authorized..."
Yeah, their empowered alright, with ignorance and incompitance.
How can they be "empowered" if the first thing out of their mouths when you mention OAR or widescreen is "Huh?".
I know a 7 year old who is far more "empowered" then they are!

But John, it seems the problem is that you seem to be able to get what you prefer at your Blockbuster, but most of us aren't able to. I am one of those people. I actually have two Blockbusters within minutes of each other and I have a hard time finding a rental in WS (Unless the selection allows you to pick which version you want to see.) Consistency is what we are asking for. Don't foresake one for the other. Give everyone what they want.

I still don't see many specific titles mentioned here. I'm honestly only aware of a handful of titles that are even available in P&S only versions.
