I have my dvd player's Black Level Control set to "darker" as my manual suggests when using component video. The new calibration disk I just got suggests putting it on "lighter" or its normal setting for the calibrations. This doesn't make sense to me since that's not how I will be viewing things.

Do you have your player set to "darker" when calibrating?

How many of you use the "cinema" mode (which mellows movies and enhances detail in dark scenes). I don't.

I tried it both ways with my Panasonic RP-91 hooked up to a Mits 55908. I use the lighter setting.

Does the Tosh SD-1700 have this option?

On my wega, the darkness setting is superior to the lighter.
