Well, I'm probably not an authority since I haven't actually seen any of them. However I do know this:
Madacy discs are cheap for a reason--they look like crap.
Image usually does a great job on their DVDs. If the Chaplin's and Keaton's are any indication, theirs will likely be the best one.
Never even heard of the other studio.
Guess it depends how important the film is to you as well.

I've got the E-Realbiz copy, and it's quite good: there are pluses and minuses between it and the Image copy. The E-Realbiz copy uses the George Eastman House print, which is a transfer at the correct 16 fps rate. A new recording of the original score has been created and synchronized with the film. All in all a very good copy, and at nearly half the price of the Image version.

Get the Image/Blackhawk Films/Film Preservation Associates version.
They do a really good job on their silents...Madacy makes THE WORST transfers from the WORST sources (I could have sworn that they used an 8mm print for Phantom of the Opera for one tape!)
They (Film Preservation Associates) really impressed me with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari...
There's a reason why they cost 19 bucks...they put a lot of effort into the transfers.

    Patrick,
Don't forget that Image put out an terrible copy of Alexander Nevsky - they aren't perfect. Mark Zimmer didn't have much good to say about the Image copy http://www.digitallyobsessed.com/showreview.php3?ID=29 .
We had a long thread several months bach contrasting the versions on Image and E-Realbiz of BOAN. Hunt this thread up when the search function is working (late at night).
The problem is that Griffith was worse than George Lucas when it came to revising his film. Originally released in 1915 as The Clansman, Griffith never could stop fussing with it. 500 feet were chopped immediately, and "regional versions" were made (I'll make up two examples: leave out the dumb Kentuckian jokes for the Kentucky version, show the heroic Georgian in Georgia. You get the idea.). Griffith continued tweaking the film up to his death in 1948. So neither Image or E-Realbiz has a "definitive original" version. Both add and delete scenes. The Image copy is 187 minutes while the E-Realbiz is "around" 200 minutes.

This is one film that I think deserves the Madacy treatment. Sorry, couldn't resist [IMG].

While I have not seen the other two versions for comparison, I did purchase the Madacy version to watch this film as part of the AFI 100 Challenge. The transfer was very poor, but I did not expect much from a film of this era (or Madacy).
Luckily, I was able to sell the disc for about the same price I paid. I had no desire to see the film again.
