can anyone explain to me in layman's terms what these terms mean in reference to surround speakers? what are the advantages/disadvantages of each? BTW, I tried the search engine for this topic and it wasn't working......

I'm not to sure the article will help you out much. It's an interesting read but....
Link Removed should answer your question exactly. In short, bipole speakers fire in phase, all drivers moving out at the same time on both sides of the speaker. Dipole speakers fire out of phase, while one side of the speaker is moving in the other side is moving out. Hope this helps.

Dipoles require precise listener positioning... directly in the null spot.
Bipoles are more forgiving in this respect.
