Quick Review: Wonderland. Stylish, well acted historical crime dramatization of the famous grizzly murders involving porn star John Holmes. I knew very little about Holmes, just that he was 3-legged and died of AIDS. So this film satisfied anything I may have "wondered" about...well, mostly. lol Pretty good soundtrack too. Not as good as something like Boogie Nights (it's not about the porn industry) or Pulp Fiction (just a single storyline here being shown from different accounts of what happened). Christina Applegate was credited but I forgot to look for her. I have no idea what role she played! lol Been watching a lot of Married with Children lately so I really wanted to see her act in something serious like this. bummer... googling I see now! She was kind of hidden in drug scenes. ...a shame about her cancer. Everybody knows somebody that has been touched by that... but she did what she had to do to survive. Best of luck to her!

She doesn't have a huge part but she played the wife of one of the drug dealers that got murdered and she was the one who was beaten but survived the murders.

I just missed her altogether.

My BL had a few things I wanted to passed for now:
Stroker Ace/Hooper/etc set mentioned earlier. too bad they are full screen, but I beleive that's all there is.

The Once Upon a Time in China trilogy. Need to research that.

$5 seems like a good deal for these.

Went to BL yesterday as the ad for last week indicated "new" DVD titles. I'm sorry to say there was *nothing* that wasn't there 2 weeks ago... The worst part is I currently have 3 duplicate titles I've purchased from BL (either accidentally or found a "upgrade" shortly after purchase) and would like to just exchange because if returned they would either invalidate a $20 purchase *or* were purchased using a 20% off and don't want to lose the discount. I leave them in the car just in case I do an unscheduled stop and have to keep moving them around so someone will not step/sit on them. I keep waiting for my wife to ask "what's in the BL bag?" I'll then have to explain they are duplicates - she already gives me major grief about the number of DVDs I purchase and that would *really* get some comments... :D

I saw 1 new one and suddenly forgot what it was. I thought it had John Ford or Glenn Ford, remembered pieces of the title but now I don't. :( Hopeless. Maybe some kind of military comedy or rom com, perhaps in black and white.... ./..geez, just found it! Teahouse of the August Moon! Glenn Ford! (pays to look just one more time, haha) Need to research that further. It's in a slim case.

Also, I learned a Mad Max Trilogy blu ray set is coming out in a few months. I pre-ordered at $35. Now, I can't find my receipt for Mad Max that I bought from BL a short time ago. :( I certainly found every other receipt from that last year from there. mad...radioman!

Teahouse of the August Moon was originally part of a Marlon Brando Box set that also included Julius Caesar, Mutiny on the Bounty 1962, The Formula, and Reflections in a Golden Eye. You can get the set for ~$15 shipped from several Amazon MP vendors (one is Fulfilled by Amazon) or keep looking at BL. Most of the titles in that set have been reportedly seen at some stores. I've only seen Julias Caesar and Mutiny on the Bounty at the one here. It also stars Eddie Albert (along with Brando of course). It's a fairly predictable but serviceable comedy with Brando in a odd role as a Japanese interpreter (along with the prostetics to make him somewhat look Japanese and occasional stereotyping) to a post WWII US occupation force in Okinawa. If I see a copy here it'll go home with me.

I've had good luck at the store here doing exchanges on titles where the receipt is "outdated". I just do a even exchange of titles ($3 for a $3, $5 for a $5, etc.) with no paperwork involved. It helps that I know several of the checkers and Managers by name but they would do this anyway. I know they do it for other people they do not know as I've been at the register when someone would come in with a no-receipt purchase. Their ony requirements are that the return be unopened/complete and the exchange be for the same total dollar amount in the same department.

Thanks Bob. I'll try that w/o receipt next time I go. Hopefully I'll find it by then. I have a habit of cramming receipts in the same tiny drawer, and when it gets full I put the ones I still need in a plastic bag and toss it in my storage room where I keep junk and boxes of movies/TV I'm not viewing currently. Searching for something like a receipt in there is never fun. :(

Mutiny is one I avoided in favor of a blu ray. I just noticed the rest don't seem to have blu rays. So a great deal, that box set even adding the Mutiny Blu ray to it. Will order those soon. ... and that really sounds like a great mixed bag of flicks judging by the reviews. I don't think I've seen any of those.

^... First post is about a online liquidator (has anyone heard of that site?). Feels a bit spammy...

Went in today. They *finally* took down the 4 sided cardboard display and cramed all the DVDs onto 4 waterfalls and the wire rack. I didn't have time to take a "good" look but it didn't appear there were any "new" titles out. May go by tomorrow for a better look.

*EDIT* - It's now the next day...

And I did go in today. I found and purchased the sole copy of Teahouse of the August Moon as well as Killer Clan (aka Liu xing hu die jian) and Let the Bullets Fly (Yun-Fat Chow). I've never heard of or seen the 2 martial arts films but Killer Clan is on the Dragon Dynansty label who tends to do good/better genre films in the original language and AOR and I tend to enjoy Yun-Fat Chow films so...

I also saw a single copy of The Formula from that Brando set. I left it simply because I don't know much about the film and am not that big a Brando fan. I'll do some research first. That leaves only Reflections in a Golden Eye that I don't recall seeing here.

They signed on just to inform us about this better place to for our shopping experience. so nice...

I'm kind of hoping my store doesn't get anything new for a while. Too many purchases on amazon for me lately. Just when I thought I was done, Looney Tunes! And something I wanted for my dad finally hit the right price. Ouch!

Aaaahhh, Looney tunes arrived. I can now sleep at night. Been wanting all 6 volumes for ages. Of course, now I need those smaller ones they are doing... :(

Anyway, BL took back Mad Max and gave me a refund even w/o receipt. So that's a load off too. now to wait for that trilogy to arrive.

They had a bunch of $6.88 stuff, DVD and blu ray, that I've never seen in there before.

Blu included Robin Hood (very tempted)... plus another I had in my brain but now it's gone. I had paper and pen to write on but I was in a serious hurry. Hopefully I can get over there again and make a nice list.

Remembered a few more over dinner:

Ron Howard DVD movie stuff with quite of a few of his best- Apollo 13, Backdraft, etc.

Matt Damon's Green zone on Blu...

Very nice about the return! :)

That LT set is very nice and was a great price on that DOTD - I paid ~$15 each for mine individually and would much rather have the smaller packaging but couldn't justify a double-dip for just that). On the LT singles, you "need" Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, Pepe LePew, Sylvester & Hippety Hopper, Porky Pig, and Mouse Chronicles. You may not want the single Bugs Bunny, all the toons have a WS matte applied causing many scenes to be "tight". Some like them many do not. The Road Runner one consists of the 1965/66 Depatie-Freling and later shorts - basically the worst of the RR toons. The Sylvester & Tweety is a "not recommended at all" as all the toons on the set were released on the Golden Collection disks. I'd like to recommend the Platinum Collections but there's *lots* of double-dipping involved. You would have to look at the list on each and decide for yourself if the new contents are worth the price.

I've seen that Ron Howard set here but didn't pick it up as I already own Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind and the other two have never struck a chord... although... I *could* return them as an even exchange (I believe it was $6 here) and get a couple more films just because...

I was very very happy about that. And I almost opened it watched it about half a dozen times. So glad I waited.

Thanks for the LT rundown! I'll be adjusting my wishlist accordingly. Definitely minimize double dipping.

I'm actually just the opposite, would rather have the larger packaging since the artwork is probably more numerous, just assuming.

I believe I have those same Howards. I really really want to upgrade my DVD for blu on Apollo 13. I need to grab that next time it's on sale. Haven't seen it for years and that's the reason. ..that is an amazing deal for those who have none of those and don't mind SD.

Big Lots had a ton of Dragon Dynasty releases. I spent $38 and that was 90% those. I'll list them later... researching as well.

Walmart had a big rack of $5 blu rays. the Last Exorcism, Pathfinder, Batman the Movie (Adam West), S. Darko. IN a hurry, will try to remember the others and list later.

Just wanted to heads up the thread... good luck!

Bought Mr. Brooks and just finished watching. I thought it was pretty good. I would have been happen had I spent movie theater ticket price for it. Nothing outstanding, just interesting from beginning to end. Costner is actually pretty good. Moore is too.

I've read elsewhere of those showing up but I don't believe the large lot I keep reading about has made its way here yet. I'll look again tomorrow just in case. I *did* pick up Killer Clans a week or so back. It's a Shaw Brothers film on the DD label. I'm usually tuned in to that label and don't recall any others. I keep looking though...

I saw those BR at WM a couple of days ago. I do not own a BR player so didn't give them much attention (but noticed most I already own on DVD and would not upgrade) instead focusing on the wire rack full of ~$10 TVonDVD titles. I found the ones I didn't already own I have little to no interest in purchasing. I *did* pick up a $10 copy of The Big Valley S1. They also had the single-sided release seasons (well, S1 & S2) of Gilligan's Island. If they'd had all three I might have done a double-dip to get rid of my flipper disk sets.

Here's a list of Dragon Dynasty titles I've read people have found at BL ($3 each):

Dragon HeatEight Diagram Pole Fighter (Shaw Bros -Celestial)Executioners From Shaolin (Shaw Bros -Celestial)Fist of Legend (Jet Li)Heroes of the East (Shaw Bros -Celestial)King Boxer (Shaw Bros, has Elvis Mitchell and Tarantino commentary)My Young Auntie (Shaw Bros)Rebel (2-disc ultimate edition with slipcase)Robin B-Hood (Jackie Chan)

Same here, I'd double dip on Gilligan in a minute! Just keep watching my doublesided DVDs and use the new ones as a backup. My WM only has S2. But if it had S1 and S2 I'd get them. And just get S3 at amazon or something. I'm sure a full series set will be really cheep in the near future, at amazon or somewhere else.

Yep, I got most of those in the list. Looking forward to King Boxer. Didn't notice that commentary, very cool! I also picked up Shaolin and Legend of the Fist.

Oh! I'm returning Fist of Legend since there is a blu ray set with that title in it that isn't a whole lot more. .Killer Klans is in several multisets...

Trying to get through Happily Never After. A few small laughs, but not quite up to the talent involved with it's making. I read the mediocre reviews and was hoping my fondness for Shrek and for the Grimms Tales would help out. But I couldn't stay awake at the 30 minute mark and bailed to take a very long nap. Bummer... so much wrong with it... not very funny, uninteresting character designs, boring setting designs, not worth the fiver at this point.

John Carpenter's The Ward. Wish I'd watched 3 episodes of Beaver's "Ward" instead. :p Well, not a bad film. But hardly "The Master of Shocks is Back!" worthy material. No, he's not back. It's an okay story...just not a whole lot done with it. more like a Halloween film with a different character, which I'd be okay with if some of it was creative and scary. But it's on the line between good and bad. I'd say worth a look at if on TV but not worth paying money for.

Had to go to Wally world for some roach traps (talk about horror!) and stopped in at BL to return Fist of Legend. Was looking around for things i might have missed and found a couple of $3 blu rays hidden behind the DVDs. Bunraku.. so I'll return that just bought DVD as well. Cool beans! And Children of the Corn Genesis, which bloodydiscusting says "isn't THAT bad". lol. I passed on it.

They have a lot of blu rays at my store. $6.88, $7, $8,... Wolfman with Hopkins and Del Toro. I felt that film was very good. That's a great price for it. I paid $10 during black friday 2 years ago. I was happy.

Thirst. Vampire film from the Oldboy director. I'll have to return for it. I haven't seen Oldboy yet.

Went in this morning and went through *all* the DVDs (something I've not done for several weeks). I'm guessing they actually got the Dragon Dynasty stuff as I found (and purchased) My Young Auntie and Robin B Hood. There were only 2 copies of each and no other DD titles other than another copy of Killer Clans that I'd purchased a week or two back. Oh well... I'm not gonna be *too* upset as I have *way* too much unopened product as it is and am running out of places to put stuff. I also found a single copy of King Rat, a pretty good and underrated WWII Japanese POW film from 1965.
