After reading around, it appears "slander" is what we are discussing, as libel requires a more permanent medium (for example, print).

Yes, but they are not criminal laws - you won't get arrested for libel or slander. You can however get sued out of your life savings (civil/tort laws).

In the spirit of this thread, there is some convern over UK becoming a Big Brother Society.
